Every parent will understand the dreaded thought of Nits!!!
You feel embarassed and think that your child is the only one.
Well think again around "half a million" children are infected with head lice each year and most children will get head lice at some point.
Head lice can not jump or fly they pass from head to head by prolonged contact. They are not fussy on hair type, the myth that they only like clean hair is not true.
Clean, dirty, short, long, straight, curly it makes no difference.

Fortunately we can treat head lice in many effective ways and more importantly in natural ways too. As the scare of potent lotions and shampoos made a lot of parents worry about what to use to treat our dreaded little friends!!!

The lice are laid close to the scalp surface.
There is a difference between nits and lice. The nit is the egg that sticks to the hair and is more difficult to remove. The live lice will often be found in the areas such as behind the ears and the back of the neck. But do check through all the hair as they are found in other areas of the scalp.
The live head lice will lay its eggs, which hatch in a matter of days and they produce a large number of lice at a time, these then develop at an alarming rate.
It has not been know for head lice to cause any harmful affects but can be both annoying and irritating.

Treatment

The most well know natural treatment is Tea Tree oil. You can buy shampoos, conditioners and pure Tea Tree oil.
Shampoo hair frequently with a tea tree shampoo or add drops of tea tree oil to your usual shampoo. More importantly use a conditioner which is again tea tree based or add the tea tree oil.
Leave conditioner in the hair for at least 5 minutes then using a head lice comb, comb thoroughly through the hair, removing as many eggs and lice as possible.

Once hair is dry I recommend using the pure tea tree oil. Yo
u do not need much so using your finger put a "very small" amount behind the ears and back of the neck. This will help the treatment continue.
If you do not like the tea tree smell then try adding other oils as well, such as lavender or lemon to your shampoo and conditioner.
Another treatment I am told to work well is good old fashioned vinegar, but do be very careful , as the effect of vinegar in the eye is to me far worse than the lice themselves.

Check the whole family for any sign of head lice and treat accordingly.

Maybe if we all become more vigilant we can reduce the number affected by head lice or as my daughter once called them.....little things having a party in my hair!!!
