Advantages: nice scent, versatile natural remedy

Disadvantages: none

Lavender oil is by far, one of the most versatile types of essential oil. When I read through a list of natural remedies for common ailments, lavender oil appears as a remedy, 8 out of 10 times. Lavender oil is also one of the few essential oil in which you can use a small amount direct on our skin.

When buying lavender essential oil, it is important to get one that is pure. There are cheap lavender oils sold in shops that smell like chemically treated fragrance and they do not have the same effect as pure lavender essential oil. One definite give away of non pure oil is the clear container. Essential oil is contained in dark container so as to protect the oil.

As I use lavender oil often, I found Holland and Barratt lavender essential oil to be less expensive than other brands of essential oil. Bottled in a dark glass container, the lavender oil is in its purest form. The oil is priced at £3.99 for 10ml and £6.79 for 20ml.

Lavender oil is known for many health benefits. The scent is calming to the nerves and it helps treat migraines, headaches, anxiety and nervous tension. It helps soothes my migraine when I put a few drops of lavender oil on a tissue and breathe gently through it. The oil is also a great remedy for pain and hence it is often used together with carrier oil as massage oil for tense and sore muscles. Lavender oil also helps to heal wounds, cuts and burns. I remember applying a tiny drop of lavender oil on a finger wound and the cut healed quickly without any visible scar.

Lavender oil can be used on a vaporiser or an oil burner. Add 6 drops of lavender essential oil to warm water and slowly burn the oil over a tea light candle. The scent is especially good to use when you are having a cold. Do not leave the candle unattended and remember to blow out the candle before the oil dries out.

I have read that the lavender oil refreshes the mind and increase mental activity however I find it to be more effective in helping me to relax. A few drops of lavender oil in the bath always help me get a good night sleep.

Though lavender essential oil is a versatile oil, it should not be used by pregnant and breastfeeding women and people suffering from diabetes.

Essential oils should be stored in cool and dark places away from any heat or direct sunlight.

Summary: a versatile and natural remedy for many common ailments.
