Holland and Barrett Lavender Pure Essential Oil
Advantages: pure natural oil, so many different uses, works well with other oils
I have quite a strong personal interest in aromatherapy which developed through my research into massage techniques. I have a small kit of pure essential oils, and Lavender is the one that receives the most use around my home. I buy Lavender Pure Essential Oil from Holland and Barrett, where it is available in a range of different sizes. It makes sense to buy the larger sizes and get more of a saving if this is something you use frequently like I do, and they also have some great sales which are always worth taking advantage of. It is currently priced as follows: £4.99 for 10ml, £8.09 for 20ml, £10.99 for 30ml, and all are included in the "Buy one get one for 1p" special offer which is a real bargain and worth taking the opportunity to stock up!
Product description: "Sweet and floral with a medium strength initial aroma, this soothing essential oil has been found to be very beneficial for supporting relaxation. Aromatherapy oils may be used singly or mixed together to create your own blends."
The oil itself is pure and natural. It comes in a small dark glass bottle with a covered lid that allows you to measure out drops accurately, and the rim catches any drips to avoid waste. Essential oils must be stored away from exposure to light and hot or cold temperatures to ensure that they do not deteriorate. It has a very strong fragrance to it, giving off the deep floral lavender scent that we're all familiar with, and having a slightly more earthy herbal tone to it in its pure form.
The best thing about this lavender oil is that it is so versatile. It has a multitude of different uses from first aid to beauty treatments to household cleaning. I use this oil frequently and it always performs well to have the desired effect. I prefer to use essential oils where possible to replace other chemical based products, as I feel better about using natural products and know that it is perfectly safe to use in a variety of ways.
===HEALTH CARE USES===
+ You should not usually use essential oils directly on the skin without diluting, but lavender is an exception to the rule. It can be used neat on the skin in small amounts by applying one or two drops directly to the affected area. I have used this oil to treat burns when I have had scalds from carelessness in the kitchen. When my last accident occured my skin turned red and was very painful, but there was no broken surface or blistering. I rubbed two drops of the oil over my skin using a very light and gentle touch to avoid further irritation. There was a nearly instant effect and my skin felt calm and soothed. I repeated the application a couple of times over the next few days and this helped to reduce the burned area as well as encouraging it to heal without leaving any visible mark or scarring.
+ Lavender is best known for its sleep-enhancing properties and you can buy a massive range of products that all include lavender to achieve this desired effect. If I'm having trouble sleeping, or if I need to go to bed but I feel too awake or restless, then I use this lavender oil to help me relax and prepare for sleep. I think it works best when a few drops are applied directly onto my bed sheets, and prefer not to put the oil on my pillows as the scent is a bit too strong and overwhelming so I find it to be more distracting than relaxing in this case. The fragrance will remain noticeable for some time and I can often still smell the lavender the following night when I'm getting into bed. If it has faded then I will top up by adding a few more drops again.
+ Soothe away aches and pains with a relaxing aromatherapy massage. You should dilute 5 drops of lavender oil into 10ml of carrier oil. Any base oil is fine, I personally prefer sweet almond oil as it is non-greasy and absorbed easily by the skin.
===BEAUTY TREATMENT USES===
+ Lavender is a popular oil for adding to bath water to aid relaxation and promote a good nights sleep. I like to take baths in the evening to relax and unwind after the day. For a purely aromatherapy effect you can add some of the lavender oil to plain bath water, or for a more moisturising effect I prefer to use a similar combination to the massage oil described above, and add the lavender oil to a carrier oil which gives my skin a nice treat as well.
+ I'm the creative type and love turning bath time into a bit of a ritual. I like to make my own lavender bath salts by combining sea salt with lavender oil and dried lavender buds. This is a really nice bath treat that is relaxing and indulgent, with no nasty additives. You can vary the scent by using different essential oils together for a different effect. This also makes for a lovely gift that is cheap and cheerful, all you need to do is find a nice jar to store it in and decorate with a ribbon around the lid.
===HOME CLEANING USES===
+ You can use 3-4 drops of this lavender oil diluted in water and heated over a ceramic burner to diffuse the scent throughout a room. This creates a nice fragrance throughout a room, and also creates a relaxing atmosphere. Again, you can combine different essential oils together for different effects.
+ Lavender oil can be combined with water and a touch of alcohol to make your own linen spray. You can use this to freshen clothing, bedding and soft furnishings, but I prefer only to use this on my bedding as it helps to keep the fabric smelling fresh and also gives that added benefit of promoting a good nights sleep.
+ Adding just a drop of lavender oil to the water when you are steam ironing gives off a lovely scent and can work out much cheaper than buying fragranced ironing water.
As you can see from the examples above, you can do a lot with lavender oil. It is also a good option if you want to combine with other essential oils to get a slightly different effect. Popular combinations include lavender and lemon for a cleansing and refreshing effect, or lavender and sage for a calming and soothing effect.
In my eyes, this is truly an "essential" essential oil! Even if you're not really into aromatherapy, this product has a wide range of uses and proves to be a practical alternative to mainstream chemical cleaners, medicines, and beauty products. I can thoroughly recommend Holland and Barrett's Lavender Pure Essential Oil and think it's excellent value for money particularly when taking advantage of their special offers.
