Advantages: Good strong massage when you need it with vibration and heat functions. Small unit for easy storage

Disadvantages: Not the full back massage offered by the full size massage cushions

Having suffered with back pain on and off for several years, probably as a result of my job, I was always on the look out for something to use when I felt a few twinges that would relax the muscles before they started causing to much pain. The Homedics range of massagers looked a good candidate and after trying the full size versions that were on demo in Debenhams I was very impressed.

I chose the smaller cushion style as we didn't have a suitable high backed chair at home and as most of my issues seem to be lower back related the SP-39H was a good option.

The cushion has shiatsu massage (clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation, vibrate and heat functions which means you can change the massage style to suit how your back is feeling. All features are controlled through a wired handset attached to the left of the cushion and has a light next to each button to let you know it is switched on (handy for the heat function as it takes a few minutes to feel it through clothing).

First impressions where that the massage was quite intense although there is a padded flap over section which allows you to reduce the pressure of the rotating bits. If it's still too strong then a folded over hand towel between you and the cushion really reduces it to just a gentle rub. With the long power lead it can reach the power socket without having to move any furniture just sit back on your favourite chair or sofa and enjoy.

It is certainly effective and does work well at relaxing tense muscles, especially when all three functions are running, but I find the 15 minute timer built into it is a bit too short. It can be annoying to have to switch it all on again just as you're beginning to relax. The other downside to this model is the fact that it only does a small section of your back at a time, you then have to sit forward move the cushion up or down and start again.

If I was buying one again I'd definitely chose the full size massager which moves the massagers up and down your back automatically, but as a cut down budget version the SP-39H is a pretty good choice. This does have the advantage of taking up much less space so when not in use I just tuck it down beside the sofa ready for next time. For sufferers of back pain I'd certainly recommend this but if you have the space and the right sort of chair then the 500H is a better choice.

Summary: It's a good product but falls short of being great.
