Advantages: Easily accessible over the counter.
Disadvantages: Costly
I recently went through a stage where I was going to bed tired but as soon as my head hit the pillow I was wide awake. Consequently I was really tired the following morning. This went on for a couple of days and I was becoming very agitated and bad tempered. All I needed was a good nights sleep!
A friend at work suggested that I tried Kalms as they had worked for her. At first I was very concerned about buying over the counter medicines so I visited their web site to find out more about the product. It was here that I found out about the 4 different stages of sleep.
Stage 1 Is the initial stage of falling asleep where the brain begins to slow down and the muscles relax.
Stage 2 Is where you are in a light sleep and the brain slows even further.
Stage 3 Is where the muscles relax and the body starts to recharge both mentally and physically.
Stage 4 Is when we are in our deepest sleep and stage 3 is continued.
Once we arrive at stage 4 we then go back up through the stages until we reach Stage 1 again. The sleep cycle is repeated over and over during the night. If we wake up before we get to stages 3 and 4 it can mean that we are being deprived of the most restful and restorative parts of the cycle. Which is why you can feel more tired than when you went to bed.
This seemed to make sense to me so I thought I would give them ago.
I bought an 84 tablet pack for £4.80 as it was the only size available in the supermarket, although you can buy packs of 50 for obviously less elsewhere.
Kalms tablets are a traditional herbal remedy made from a blend of plant ingredients that help promote the body's natural sleep patterns whether the sleeplessness is caused by stress or an upset body clock caused by jet lag. The aim is to calm the mind down and aid a peaceful sleep without causing drowsiness the following day. This is confusing as the directions state that they may make you sleepy and if affected do not drive or operate any tools or machines.
For adults you are advised to take 3 or 4 tablets swallowed whole one hour before bedtime but not on an empty stomach. They are not recommended for children under 12 years old and personally I wouldn't give them to any child without first consulting a doctor as the herbs used have a sedative action. Nor should you take them if you are pregnant or breast feeding
Ingredients.
Powdered valerian 45mg
Powdered Passiflora 16.82mg
Powdered Wild Lettuce 22.5mg
Vervain Powder60mg
Hops 30mg
Sucrose.
Well in desperation for a good night's sleep I took two of the grey coloured tablets as I was working the next day and didn't want to take the full dose just in case they did cause drowsiness.
I did sleep well but I woke with a splitting headache, felt awful and had to have the day off work. Don't know whether I was allergic to any of the ingredients in the tablets or that I hadn't taken the recommended dose or that I was just too tired.
These tablets seem to work for some people but unfortunately I don't think I will be using them again. I think I will try the old fashioned remedies like a good soak and a drink of horlicks!
Summary: Work for some people but not for me.
