Advantages: They work

Disadvantages: They don't solve the underlying problem

“Every now and then the stresses and strains of life can seem difficult to cope with”. Like right now for instance. I’m meant to be preparing for an interview I have on Monday for a job that could be what I need to get my life back on track (so yeah, it’s potentially a big deal). The only problem is, the areas I’m planning on revising are so huge that it seems pointless spending a day on it… I need at least a week.

I also want to read my books, write opinions and check out other people’s reviews on DooYoo, but I can’t do it all. Then I feel guilty and then I can’t concentrate and I am paralysed by indecision. I have taken a week’s leave from work to relax, de-stress and recharge my batteries, but today is not going well on that score!

Quiet Life to the rescue! I have just taken a couple of tablets and hopefully they will take the edge off the feelings of stress. I’ve used them in the past when I have felt under pressure, when all the breathing and relaxation techniques don’t help quell the butterflies, sickness and the difficulty I have in breathing. They work well, better than Kalms, which had no effect on me whatsoever.

Quiet Life is a herbal remedy that “can help soothe away periods of worry, irritability, stresses and strains”. It contains valerian (50mg), hops (75mg), passiflora (58mg), wild lettuce (29mg) and motherwort (34mg) and is also rich in B Vitamins. (Further information regarding these ingredients can be found at the end of this review.)

The recommended dose is two tablets taken with water after meals twice a day and three tablets before bed to promote sleep. The tablets are not recommended for children and should not be taken if pregnant, breast-feeding or if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

It goes without saying that you should always read the label and instructions supplied and that if you are taking any other medication, you should really consult your doctor. Even though this is a herbal remedy it could react with other medication you are taking rendering it useless or worse.

I find that the tables (I mean tablets, but the typo is funny) don’t leave me feeling groggy like other valerian-based products do. They take the edge of the symptoms so that I can then effectively deal with the causes. Also, because they are small, round and coated they don’t smell and taste like horses (not that I’ve ever tasted a horse) and they are easy to swallow.

Quiet Life is available in pack sizes of 50, 100 and 200 tablets. You can buy them online, from Tesco, Boots or other high street chemists and large supermarkets. You should expect a 100 tablets to set you back around £3.59.

~~~ Active Ingredients – Descriptions from www.botanical.com ~~~
I have taken extracts and whole passages of text from the above website for people who are interested in the ingredients of this product.
Valerian
It has a remarkable influence on the cerebro-spinal system, and is used as a sedative to the higher nerve centres in conditions of nervous unrest, St. Vitus's dance, hypochrondriasis, neuralgic pains and the like.
The drug allays pain and promotes sleep. It is of especial use and benefit to those suffering from nervous overstrain, as it possesses none of the after-effects produced by narcotics.
During the recent War, when air-raids were a serious strain on the overwrought nerves of civilian men and women, Valerian, prescribed with other simple ingredients, taken in a single dose, or repeated according to the need, proved wonderfully efficacious, preventing or minimizing serious results.
Though in ordinary doses, it exerts an influence quieting and soothing in its nature upon the brain and nervous system, large doses, too often repeated, have a tendency to produce pain in the head, heaviness and stupor.
Hops
According to www.botanical.com Hops also have a sedative effect, improve the appetite and promote sleep.
Passiflora
The drug is known to be a depressant to the motor side of the spinal cord, slightly reducing arterial pressure, though affecting circulation but little, while increasing the rate of respiration. It is official in homoeopathic medicine and used with bromides, it is said to be of great service in epilepsy. Its narcotic properties cause it to be used in diarrhoea and dysentery, neuralgia, sleeplessness and dysmenorrhoea.
Wild Lettuce
The drug resembles a feeble opium without its tendency to upset the digestive system. It is used to a small extent as a sedative and narcotic.
Motherwort
According to www.botanical.com Motherwort is “especially valuable in female weakness and disorders (hence the name), allaying nervous irritability and inducing quiet and passivity of the whole nervous system.” How rude!
“Old writers tell us that there is no better herb for strengthening and gladdening the heart, and that it is good against hysterical complaints, and especially for palpitations of the heart when they arise from hysteric causes, and that when made into a syrup, it will allay inward tremors, faintings, etc.”
“In Macer's Herbal we find 'Motherwort' mentioned as one of the herbs which were considered all-powerful against 'wykked sperytis.'”
I think that is hilarious!
Thanks for reading.
Summary: I guess I'd better get back to my preparation....
I have never taken any of such pills, so I can not comment on that score. I like your reviw, and good luck with the interview. Richard.
