Advantages: Temporary releif from symptoms

Disadvantages: Expensive

Ever had that horrible scratchy throat sensation and sniffy, drippy nose and felt that you would surely not last the day? Most of us have!

I’ve tried lots of different remedies ranging from Beechams Powders, to Vick (even those revolting things that you shove up your nose and sniff….and, I don’t mean glue sticks! LOL)

I’ve tried Contac cold tablets, paracetamol, aspirin, neurophen and just about every combination in between but the only thing that seems to work for me is Lemsip Max Daytime Capsules.

The idea is that these capsules will take care of your cold symptoms and allow you to get on with your day as normal.

Don’t expect a cure!

I don’t think there is such a thing.

The best you can hope for is to control the symptoms.

These capsules contain paracetamol, phynelefrine HCI and caffeine are selected to relieve headache, body/joint pains, stuffy head, runny nose and tiredness, which we all recognise as a symptoms of the common cold.

Each yellow and red capsule contains:

Paracetamol 500mg
Phenylefrine 6.1 mg
Caffeine 25mg.
(Plus at least 5 E-numbers to make them look pretty!!)

Paracetamol will relieve headache and fever.
Phenylefrine is a nasal decongestant which relieves a blocked or stuffy nose.
Caffeine is a mild stimulant.

If you drink plenty of fluids these capsules suit most people but there area few precautions to take.

Don’t use these if you have a thyroid problem, a serious heart condition, or high blood pressure. Take care if you could be allergic to any of the ingredients, and if you are taking (or have taken in the past 14 days) MAOI antidepressants (Nardil, etc) do not take them at all.

Don’t drink alcohol if you have been taking these capsules and avoid anything that contains paracetamol.

Adults (over 12) can take 4 doses of 2 capsules during a 24 hour period and children between 6 and 12 can take half that dose.

Take the capsules with water and don’t chew them. (You will know if you do as they are absolutely vile! I’ve tried.)

If you have pre-existing medical conditions you should ask you doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Do these work?

Well, I took two at 8 am the other morning and by 9 am I did feel better. My headache had gone and I could breathe through my nose. I did still have the shivers though.

By 11am my symptoms had returned but I couldn’t take another dose until 12 o’clock. They do work but that are not the magic pill they pretend to be (£3.18 for 16).

I would say that these capsules alleviate symptom and allow you to carry on working but that once it come to bed time you would be as well taking a couple of paracetamol tablets (cost 19p for 16) with a hot drink.

These are expensive but worth it if you have to struggle through the day at work. However, once you get home use the cheaper method! It works just as well.

I don't suppose you've even read this far if you already have a streaming cold! However, for anyone who has, well done. You are to be comended for your fortitude! LOL

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Take a couple of these and feel a bit more 'human' for a while. They may not cure your problem but they will certainly make you feel better. Just hold out until bed time and then treat yourself to a hot toddy (or three). All symptoms of your cold will then disappear.

Ah...tishoooooooooo! Bless you!

Summary: great treatment for symptomatic relief of colds but not a cure!

Ah... The old Lemsip... Where would we be without them at this time of the year? I had a little cold/sore throat thing going on about a week ago and it reminded me how naff I feel when I get a cold. Anything that helps is fine by me!

Great little op! Thanks for reminding me I should stock up on the cold/flu remedies!!!
