Advantages: Easy to take with a glass of water
Disadvantages: Not quite as soothing as the Lemsip powder drinks can be
I have bought and used Lemsip branded cold and flu products over the course of many years and found them to be mostly reliable and easy to use. The Lemsip capsules that you can buy instead of the powders (that require mixing with hot water) are a product that I have found useful for those times when I have been suffering with a cold or flu type illness and have been away from home, with no access to freshly boiled water with which to mix up one of the powder sachets. The capsules are a good alternative product in my opinion as they are very portable and easily carried in a handbag or jacket pocket when out and about.
The cold and flu capsules contain 500mg of paracetamol each, which I feel helps to reduce pain and take down a temperature when I take 2 of them as directed by the instructions. There is also caffeine in the capsules which has been added so as to aid with fighting off that horrid over tired feeling that you get when you have battled with a cold for some time and feel drained and sleepy because of that. I find that this does work to ease tiredness to some extent, but it is often dependent on the severity of the cold/ flu illness I am going through, as to how well this actually works for me.
The other ingredient that I find very helpful in Lemsip cold and flu products is the decongestant phenylephrine hydrochloride, which has been added to the Lemsip cold and flu capsules, so that they can help to clear a blocked, stuffy nose and ease symptoms for a few hours. I find that the addition of a decongestant really does help to ease symptoms for a few hours when I take these capsules and I find it a relief to be able to breathe more freely, with a less blocked and stuffy feeling nose for a few hours. After a time the effect of the capsules does soften which is to be expected in my opinion. Depending on how I am feeling at the time, I do sometimes have to take another dose of capsules according to the 4 hour and daily dosage limits as set out on the product instructions.
~Product rating/ price~
I find that these average sized Lemsip cold and flu capsules are fairly easy to take as they come in nice neat and smooth capsule shapes that can be swallowed down quickly with a cold drink. I do prefer the Lemsip powders for use when I have access to hot water for mixing with them as I find the warm drink quite soothing in itself, although I find the capsules very useful for use when away from home. The decongestant ingredient in the capsules is something that I find particularly helpful and after having taken a dose of 2 capsules, I most often find that they begin to take effect after around 20 to 30 minutes or so.
The cost of a pack of 16 capsules is £2.50 to £2.99 depending on where you buy them, which is comparable with the cost of other similar branded products that work in the same way and very often contain the same ingredients. Some similar looking cheaper unbranded products do not contain the decongestant ingredient and therefore do not work as well as the Lemsip capsules do. I feel it is better to opt for something such as these capsules with the decongestant in if possible, as results are much better when this is included in the product in my opinion. My rating for Lemsip capsules is 4 stars as I feel they can be of help if used with care and attention to the recommended daily and hourly dosage limits.
Summary: A useful healthcare product
