Meadowsweet (Filipendula Ulmaria) is a wild plant, which can be found in damp meadows. It produces very fragrant flowers and in medieval times, the plant was known as a strewing herb. Culpeper described it as being of help in acquiring a "merry heart". Meadowsweet flowers in summer and once it produces its cream flowers, it is ready for harvesting.

As a herbal remedy, Meadowsweet is useful in the treatment of the digestive system as it has excellent antacid properties and is calming for an overactive digestive system including relief of heartburn, acid stomach hiatus hernia and stomach ulcers. It is also a good astringent, a diuretic, and an anti-inflammatory remedy.

Meadowsweet should be taken in the form of a tea, which can be made by taking equal parts of dried Meadowsweet, camomile flowers, and comfrey leaves. These should be mixed together and stored in a clean jar.

To use, put one teaspoon of the mixture into a one cup of boiling water and allow the tea to draw for ten minutes. For the best results in relieving your symptom, you should drink between three and six cups per day over a long period of time.

It should be noted that large dosages of tea or strong tea might cause nausea in some people. Elderly people should use half this dose.
