Premium Review Melatonin: How To Get A Good Nights Sleep (220 words)
by - written on 29/01/08 (Useful, 222 readings)
Rating:

I received melatonin on prescription because I have trouble regulating my sleep cycle. I frequently have trouble getting and staying asleep, and would happily sleep all day. I have also seen it being prescribed on the childrens ward, the only sleeping drug they gave to children there. The dosage I was prescribed was 5mg, slightly more than the dosage in the advertised product which is only 4mg. I was advised to take it an hour or too before I wanted to go to sleep. It was explained to me that most of us have a peak in our natural melatonin levels around 9pm, but modern lifestyle disrupts that for most of us. It worked really well in the short term. It induces ...  Read the complete review

Melatonin is a natural chemical produced in the brain and helps make people feel sleepy when its dark and wakeful when its light. It is available over the counter in the US as a remedy for sleeplessness and jet lag, but is only available by prescription in the UK. I was prescribed Melatonin about two weeks ago, having been to my doctor on a fairly regular basis for the past two years about my lack of sleep. Basically I was not sleeping at night and then not catching up during the day so ended up getting around 3 hours sleep a day. I have been given sleeping pills (Zopiclone usually) which gave me a sore head and left me feeling dizzy which to me ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

Melatonin is a natural hormone that is produced by the body especially increased at night time and is secreted in the brain. It is thought that some people have less melatonin and being prescribed melatonin that comes in various doses can help with the sleep patterns. My son was prescribed melatonin years ago to help with his disturbed sleep patterns. He originally started on a small dose but presently takes four mgs of melatonin and three mgs of slow release melatonin that as it suggests releases the melatonin through the night. From the start of using melatonin there was a definite improvement to his sleep and usually within thirty or so minutes of taking ...  Read the complete review

Be very wary of this product ! On a pharmacists recommendation in the USA I bought some Melatonin to help me sleep while there on holiday , I took it for 16 days over there plus another 7 when I returned home to help with the jetlag I always suffer badly with. Some 10 days after my return home I had an attack of amnesia which hospitalized me with a suspected stroke, I completely lost my memory for a few hours causing distress for my family. Everything gradually returned to normal again but I have no recollection of events that day, it was very frightening as I started to recover.
