Advantages: I might not die so soon
Disadvantages: I love smoking
As I Type this there is a Nicorette inhalater hanging out of my gob and it's nowhere near as good as a fag. Yesterday evening I took my last Mayfair out of it's packet and sucked on it so hard the windows of the house blew in. You see, I knew it was to be my last. Yes I too have succumb to the pressure. The risk of cancer, the breathlessness, the cough which greets me each morning, the smell on your clothes and in your hair. All of these I could happily deal with but the sad fact is the reason that I'm giving up the oilies is that I can't afford to smoke. That's it. No other reason. If I won the lottery today, I would buy Cuba. Then smoke it. I foolishly started smoking when I was 13 and very quickly got to like it. It wasn't long before dinner money was being spent on 10 Silk Cut, a box of matches and a packet of Polos to fool my Mum. It's a little known fact amongst adolescents that Mum's are not stupid, Polos arouse their suspicions and no matter how careful you think you've been, she knows. Then one day I woke up and realised that I smoked 30 a day. Now just in case you may be sitting there laughing at me, Benson held nonchalantly in your hand, thick white plumes cascading into the air saying "But Steve, you fool. You smoke 30 a day whereas I smoke just 5" I shall tell you what my doctor told me: If you smoke regularly, be it 2 a day or 40 a day you have a 1 in 2 chance of dying from a smoking related illness. I feel much better now I have got all this off my chest. I think everyone experiences some degree of bitterness during withdrawl. The safest way is don't take it up in the first place. Kids, are you listening? Go back and read my doctor statistic if you're still undecided. I love to smoke but I might try living for a while. I think I'll spend the extra money on lager. Thankyou for listening.

- 10/09/00 I think drink-related deaths are more immediate.... on the roads, at work, beware how much of that lager you drink and what you do when you're tanked up. Just kidding. Glad you've given up smoking. Wish I could so easily. |

- 30/07/00 You wrote that opinion about a month ago - how are you getting on? My nicorette inhaler is in the drawer and yes I am surrounded by a swirling fog. |
