The Nicorette inhaler and I.
Manumas 22 , has given a horrendous list of adulterations present in cigarettes. Their addition has two aims; making cigarettes more addictive and taste enhancement. I can not understand why legislation targets ads and such like instead of using the pure foods act and insisting that cigarettes contain pure shredded tobbacco leaf with no additives and any process which leaves traces of extraneous substances be banned. I am certain that this would decrease the number of smokers, new and veteran, far better than all the education efforts so far. If you've ever tasted home raised tobacco cigarettes you would not care to repeat the performance.

As is, we are hooked, and nobody can deny the harmful effect. Apart from the carcigenous nature of the fag, new side effects are discovered every day. Amongst them the contribution to osteoporosis. As I was diagnosed with the onset of this condition I decided it was time to quit.

Going cold turkey was out of question. I had my dose of that on long flights with bad connections, and some twenty odd hours without
.a smoke made me insufferable. Even my non smoking husband wanted me to have that smoke.
I had tried Nicorette products on these occasions, namely their nicotine laced chewing gum. There was no relief .
The inhaler looked more up my alley. It is very pricey in my neck of the woods, a tad over 18 pounds, or the equivalent of a carton ( yes 10 x 20) of local fags. Our HMO's do not finance this product.
The package comes with a very inelegant flimsy white plastic cigarette holder and eighteen filters containing nicotine and menthol to be inserted into it. The instructions state that at the beginning one would use about three filters a day, decreasing as time went on.

I had finished my last fag at bed time and next day hadf my first'puff' on the inhaler with my m orning coffee. I think it was due to the menthol, but the effect was
like a mule kick. I did not need another "puff' for some two hours. The filter lasted me a whole day. As the menthol taste disappeared the effect lessened, and by the end of the day I was sucking on it desperately, too mean to start another.
By the end of the week I was making a filter last for two days. At the end of a fortnight I was sucking the thing like a baby's pacifier and didn't need it loaded. It was with me at all times to be used in case of aggravation, or next to smoking friends as asubstitute.
I must admit that the craving for cigarettes went surprisingly swiftly, however, it was replaced by a craving for food. My generally healthy appetite became insatiable. I suddenly developed a sweet tooth, and from a person who'd never eaten between meals I became a constant snacker.
At the end of four months, with a heavy heart and a body ten kilo heavier I lit up again.
I am now smoking about half as much as before, my craving for foods has gone, and if I feel I am overdoing the weed I pull out the loaded inhaler and get back to a lesser amount again. It is invaluable on long flights but my metabolism is not up to a complete break
