Advantages: Helps you on your way to being smoke free and healthier.

Disadvantages: Can irritate the skin and cause headaches.

I have been smoking on and off since I was a teenager, more on than off if Im honest. But being a mother to 4 children, I always feel guilty for having that *sneaky fag* in the garden, when I think no one is watching!
My older girls thought I had still given up, but one morning a few months ago, it was pouring with rain, , puffing away in the garden, there was my 13 year old staring at me out of the window with pure disgust on her face. She decided to give me the silent treatment for 3 days.

Like a scolded child I went to the local chemist and purchased Nicorette Patches, you get a weeks supply in one packet, and they are rather expensive around £10 a pack but does vary from shop to shop. I had tried these some years ago, as I was only a light smoker I was recommended to start on step 2 which provides a little more nicotine absorbed into the skin in 24 hours than the last Step (3).
Step 3 is used for the last month ,by which time you should be well on your way to being a non smoker, obviously it doesnt work like that for everyone.
But with step 3 you have much less nicotine, so you are being *weaned off*slowly

You apply a patch and keep it on all night so you hopefully dont wake with your usual morning cravings. You use each step for a month or until you feel able to start a reduced nicotine level.

I have to say the patches (which look a little like a plaster) seemed to irritate my skin, but you can re-apply them to a different area of your skin.
I found after 2 or 3 days I got used to them. There are also other side effects such as a headache or an upset stomach, but fortunately I did not experience these.
After being on these patches for 2 months I am now smoke free. You do need lots of will-power particularly if you are a heavy smoker.
They are an aid to help you quit, and without will power you will not succeed. You will need plenty of encouragement and support, or if like me, being nagged at and told that your selfish can help you quit too!
All in all I have found the patches a very effective method to help me on my way to being a smoke free mum..

Summary: A very effective aid for quitting smoking.

Congratulations on the quit.

Good review although the patches did not work for me - they made me sick when I used them. I eventually gave up by going cold turkey!
