Advantages: take away the need for ciggies

Disadvantages: Can be costly

Giving up smoking had always been in my mind for years, but I had been scared of trying, thinking I would not be able to cope.

But after thinking long and hard, I decided to take the chance and give it a try.

So I visited my doctor and asked him about what was the best way to go about it, I was initially intending on trying the tablets, but he advised me against this and recommended the Nicorette Patches. So I gave them a go, thinking I would be smoking again in no time.

To my surprise, I found it very easy and I am now entering my sixth week as a non-smoker. These things really work, they totally take away the urge to smoke and I no longer find myself gasping for a ciggie.

They really take the edge off giving up and that gasping feeling is non-existent, as before if I had even tried cutting down on ciggies, I found myself gasping. I had smoked about 20 a day for over 15 years and really wanted to pack in.

Nicorette patches come in 3 strengths, and my doctor first put me on the strongest that is 15mg for 2 weeks, then the medium that is 10 mg for 2 weeks and now I am down to the mildest patch that is 5 mg and in a week or so, I will be taken off them for good.

They work by releasing pure Nicotene into your bloodstream, which in turn takes away your desire for ciggies, the only thing they don’t help you with, is having something to do with your hands, but that is easily overcome by doing a crossword or something. You wear each patch on your arm, hip, leg or chest for a maximum of 16 hours a day and they slowly release the required Nicotine into your bloodstream.

I was lucky, because being unemployed I am allowed these on the national health, but for those of you unable to do this, there is the major drawback of having to pay for them and they are not cheap.

The prices range from £16 for a pack of seven 15mg patches to about £13 for a pack of the weakest ones, but in the long run, they are
worth it and think of the money you will save by packing in the evil drug.

One word of warning, make sure you consult your GP before trying these patches as it is highly recommended.

Concise stuff, very good op :-)
What do the patches taste like? If that seems like an odd question, only reason I ask is because, there is an urban myth that really desperate people like the nicotine of the patches... :-)
