Advantages: it helped me quit

Disadvantages: they don't work for everyone

Whooo I have done it I've quit the evil weed forever (hopefully) I packed in the
fags whatever you want to call it i've done it and boy do I feel good.
I had wanted to quit for ages and after many atempts I visited the doctors who gave me
nicorette patches on prescription. She asked me a few questions and took my
blood pressure which was surprisingly ok and wrote the prescription out for me.
I wanted to quit for a number of reasons, the kids the money but most importantly my health.
I clutched my all important prescription and rushed to the chemist to get
it filled.

I felt really good and gave my sister the half full packet of cigarettes
that I had and rushed home to apply my first patch.

The patches come in three different strenghts 15mg,10mg and 5mg and get smaller
as the *dose* gets weaker.
You are advised to start off on the patch that matches the amount of cigarettes
that you smoke more than 20 you start on the 15mg less than 20 you start on the 10mg
and less than 10 you start off on the 5mg patches.

As I used to smoke 30 a day oh I love those words used to I was started on
the 15mg patches.
You apply one each morning to wherever you want but I would reccomend your arm lol
and leave it there until you go to bed at night and then use a fresh one each
day.

At first I was sceptical how could a small brown square cure me of this evil
filthy habit but I was amazed I didn't feel the urge for a smoke.
I though yeah ha we will see how long this lasts but to my amazement it has.
Don't get me wrong sometimes I could kill for a fag but I don't give in I just remember how
I don't cough up half a lung each morning and that my bank balance is looking
much better these days too.

I get urges at strange times such as when I'm relaxing watching the tv or
when I'm reading a good book but strangly enough not afte
r a meal or
with a drink as I would expect.

When using the patches you are slowly weaned off them as you start off with the 15mg
for four weeks then you move down to the 10 mg patches for two weeks then the 5mg for
two weeks but you can continue with them as long as you feel you need them
Of course you do need a certain amount of will power too but for me just
knowing they were there on my arm was all that I needed to give me encouragement.

People have argued the case that they shouldn't be available on prescription as
the health service funds could be put to better use but I think it is better
to try to encourage smokers to quit before it leads to more seroius health
problems such as emphisemia or lung cance which are more expensive to treat
in the long term.

some doctors don't even like prescribing these to patients because of the cost
but if you don't have a sympathetic doctor you can buy these for £16.99
for a seven day packet which works out at £54 per month.
Quite expensive I hear you say but just think how much you would save not
buying cigarettes.

I used to spend around £40 per week on fags but now I try to save at least £20
and I usually buy myself a little treat each week just to remind myself
how well I'm doing and all my friends and family have been great with all
the encouragement and praise they have lavished apon me.

I really can't see me going back to the evil weed but you never can tell.

Hope this gives someone reading this the insentive to quit too good luck and fingers crossed.

Well done to you all who stopped on Nicorette. I tried it but 16 hours was not enough for me. If anyone is having problems, I would definately recommend Niquitin CQ which is a 24 hour patch. You can also use it as a 16 hour patch. I tried everything for years until I found Niquitin CQ. The patch is clear which is a nice wee touch, it doesnt look like you have a huge big plaster on your arm!! The Committed Quitters plan is far superior to the Nicorette or Nicotinell (yes tried that one too). You get so much support and it is individually tailored for you personally. Thanks to Niquitin CQ I now am fag free (60 per day). It saved my life. Try it all you smoke heads!!!
