I was a heavy smoker, for about 13 years and when I was trying to conceive I still smoked very heavily and wondered why it took 2 yrs to get pregnant ?? I still smoked but I had cut right down up until I was about 4 months pregnant and it got to the stage where I was embarassed to smoke in public, I think there is nothing worse than seeing a woman who is pregnant with a fag hanging out of her mouth, I was at this stage still smoking about 5-8 per day (which is still too much) I had agreed to take part in a study of pregnant women who smoked and were trying to give up, they sent leaflets every month, of which I didnt read, and thought I dont need these !!! Anyway it got to the stage when I thought this is really stupid, I am a closet smoker, and it was making me feel really sick , so I set a date to give up and smoked my last fag at 3.54 pm on August 5th 1999. I couldnt use any patches or anything as you cant when pregnant and did it cold turkey style. It was a nightmare, things didnt seem the same, as it would be when I was doing certain things that I would light up, so its just a case of changing the routine or doing something different, I gained 3.5 stones in weight during my pregnancy and I am left with about 1 stone to shift. I am so glad I have stopped for my sake, my childs sake and my purses' sake, there is no way I could afford to smoke anymore. I do still miss it sometimes, but the smell of a smokers clothes and house still puts me off totally. All of my family smoke and after a day at their houses I get home and have to change mine and my sons clothes 'cos we stink!! Its the best thing I have ever done, apart from give birth and if you are going to do it, dont bother with patches etc, "Go cold turkey" its the only way!!!
