Advantages: Minor relief from cravings

Disadvantages: Doesn't last, and they itch

I also am a two time failure of the nicorette patch system. Not only did I find that they didn't ease the cravings significantly, but there are also minor side effects, namely difficulty sleeping and an itchy rash where the patch is placed. I got the first week free from the NHS and was all set to go through the 3-6 months....if I had lasted the first week. I suppose what they say is true, there really is no substitute for willpower, and I might write another opinion on giving up smoking when I find enough of it.

Thank you for your support jymee. I really mean that. However, is what you are suggesting not actually the definition of will power???

I understand your point, however will power alone will not help you quit smoking. Smoking (as you will know) causes your body to become chemically addicted to nicotine (amongst the other 150 or so additives found in cigarettes) so simply willing yourself to stop just wont work. Will power has about as much chance of making someone stop as putting the price up on a packet or by showing diseased lungs will - Never. The first thing smokers do in a stressfull situation such as not having one, moaning about price increases or looking at a dead persons heart is to light up. This is why it cant and wont work.

The only true way to quit smoking is 1) to want to in the first place and 2) just never light another ciggy again (which is different to will power) then 3) realising how easy it was (easier in fact than actually starting)then go from there.

I quit smoking 21 months ago (I was 40 + a day for at least 12 years), I put out my last ciggy and that was that, no will power needed, no cravings a small weight increase (well hey Im getting old anyway! I can live with that!).

Good luck to you and all others who wish to quit!
