This review comes with health warning - you may unwittingly start scratching your head whilst reading it and the author takes no responsibility for any discomfort!

Back in the "olden days".....(well, until the late 1980's) Nitty Nora the Bug Explorer would line every child up once a term.......girls who had their hair in braids would have to undo them, and Nitty Nora would rifle through your hair to see if you had Nits........we all dreaded being given the letter to take home informing our Mums that we needed dowsing in disinfectant, but thankfully these letters were few and far between, and the problem of headlice was more or less kept under control.

Nit nurses stopped visiting schools as a matter of routine when some bright spark decided that to rifle through a child's hair looking for bugs was tantamount to child abuse. So for the last generation of school children (and their families) nits have become an everyday hazard of being at school.

During primary school, we fought the never ending battle against headlice - after every hairwash, we combed and combed to try and keep them away, but before you know it the little critters are back again, because the children at school are all so friendly, and it only takes one child not to be treated and every child in the class ends up riddled again.

Our primary school were forever sending home notes reminding parents to check their child's hair regularly......sadly some parents chose to ignore these, so the problem never really went away.

Also, if you fail to get rid of every last critter and egg, they are very quick to reproduce and to infest the hair again, so if you miss one - you're fighting a losing battle!

We tried lotions, potions, combing and zapping with an electronic thing - we tried natural remedies and chemicals......but still the headlice got the better of us.

AARRRGGHHHH!!!!!

Then another Mum recommended the Nitty Gritty comb - This is a metal comb that you can buy from Boots or from the Nitty Gritty website - it has a flat disc like "handle" with plastic grip strips to stop it slipping when you are using it, and long (about an inch and a half) teeth.

The difference between every other nit comb on the market and the nitty gritty comb, is that the teeth have a spiral "thread" on each one which really does capture those critters and their eggs far far better than any other. The teeth and their grips are tight, so there is no escape, yet the comb does not pull or tangle hair as it combs through.

So, wash your child's hair, and while wet, simply comb through from the roots to the ends - if there are eggs (nits) or lice there, they will get caught up and dragged right through.

Once you have your haul of delights, trapped between the comb's teeth, simply wipe them on a piece of kitchen towel and comb again.

There is no need for expensive lotions or potions that might be harmful to the child's skin - it is simply a comb and a freshly washed child's head!

Because this comb gets far more nits and lice out of the hair, there is less chance of re-infestation. And because it is easy to use and is reliable, more children (and their parents) were using it at school so the problem eased up - no one could use the excuse that they didn't have time, or couldn't afford more lotion, or that their child didn't sit still long enough - using the Nitty Gritty comb involves a one off expense only of about £10 and the whole exercise is so simple and painless that the children are less likely to wriggle out of your clutches before the job is done.

Thankfully my daughter is now at high school so head lice are far fewer in number, but if she goes babysitting for one of the youngsters, she has been known to pick up the odd bug or two - but the nitty gritty comb soon sorts them out and she uses it as a matter of course to comb through her hair after a shower, "just in case" because it is so simple and reliable!

Once you have done your darling's hair, these are easy to clean - I put mine in the dishwasher........

The Nitty Gritty comb has won numerous awards, and so it should. Every parent of young children should have one in their cabinet ready...........

Their website is www.nittygritty.co.uk and is very user friendly.

Summary: Are you itching yet........?

I hadn't realised the Nit Nurses had all been axed - what a shame. I don't think I ever knew anyone to get nits when I was a kid but they seem very common now.
