Advantages: lighter pockets

Disadvantages: You don't get ANYTHING and then they blame YOU

In 2001'ish, whilst we were living in Manchester, my wife bought a pair of contact lenses at the Eye Clinic, at this time they offered her a service where she paid a monthly fee of about £15 and in return she would get a bi-annual eye test and sent free contacts. She was also told it included replacement if she lost any lenses. She took this up but was never given a copy of the contract.

We left Manchester in 2003, by which time she had received one pair of lenses. We moved to London.

My wife found there was an Eye Clinic in Cheapside, close to her work, she changed her address to our new address and at one point around that time had a replacement lense.

Whilst in London she has never had any lenses and quite honestly forget about the ones that she was entitled to. Recently (Early March or Late Feb) one of her lenses started irritating her and she went to Cheapside to get a new pair.

At Cheapside she was told she wasn't entitled to a new pair and she still owed money on the last pair ?? She said that she had never had a pair for more than 3 years and she was paying monthly anyway, they were insistant.

It then transpired that they had sent at least two pairs to Manchester, they appear to have more than one computer with a database on, the shop had our London Address, whilst the head office, which initiated auto sending had Manchester.

So instead of replacing my wifes lense (which was irritating her) they told her they can't do anything until head office sorts it out. I felt in the circumstances they should have replaced the lense and sorted out problems later, they were after all receiving £15 a month still.

After more than a month waiting and my wife having to buy a pair from another optician due to complicating things by losing one of her lenses (Cheapside was closed over Easter) they have now refuted any guilt by some rude woman phoning my wife from head office telling her she was stupid expecting anything as she didn't update her address until the 18th April 2006 !!!!!! two days previous?, she then insisted it was right as her database told her so. Whatever happened to the time waiting??

1. My wife has paid almost £900 for virtually nothing.

2. Whenever my wife went to Cheapside, they confirmed she was the right person by telling her our address (London Address).

3. 18th April !!!!!!!!!!

4. They had two phone numbers both with the last digit incorrect (One our London home number by the way)

I feel we should at least have back some of the money from the last 3 years only I won't hold my breath!

They are lying thieves.

Summary: £900, even if they had sent a couple of contact lenses!! thieves

The monthly fees was for bi-annual replacements and 'insurance' against loss, not a monthly update. We moved etc, other things were on her mind, she had been to the shop to change address and buy some supplies, as early as 2003. Who would notice if an item you expect every two years was not delivered unless you had a problem that reminded you. In this case her lenses, now 4 years old, which she had no problems with prior, started hurting/irritating her through being worn out and they left her in that state when she went to the shop.

I felt it wasn't worth the money to be honest, but after paying all that money you would expect their first reaction would have been to ensure she was comfortable instead of leaving her with red runny eyes!

I think that part of the blame here lies with your wife. That's not meant to appear rude at all, but do you not think after paying out a standing order for 3 years and receiving nothing, something should have been done about it before now ? A month of paying with no results would have made me question things sooner. 3 years seems very irresponsible and a little unfair on the company.
