Otex Ear Drops
Advantages: Simple and effective
Disadvantages: Not overly cheap
I had never previously used ear drops until quite recently. I had woken up with a blocked ear and thought nothing of it. I presumed it would 'pop' on its own eventually, but a few days later it was still the same and was starting to drive me mad. My mother in law recommended Otex ear drops to me as she suffers with blocked ears on a regular basis and now uses Otex as her usual form of treatment to combat it.
I have never really like the thought of ear drops in the past, but thought I would give them a go. I got mine from Boots at the price of £4.99. This is for a 10ml bottle, though they are also available in an 8ml bottle for slightly less money.
My first impressions were that these ear drops were quite expensive for what you get, though I thought I would hold my judgement back until I had actually used them. I was surprised at how easy these were to get in the ears. I half expected the drops to run out the bottle and make rather a lot of mess as lets face it, putting ear drops into your own ear is not easy. However, I was surprised to find how much control I actually had over the bottle. Nothing spilt out of the bottle and I was easily able to monitor how many drops were placed in my ear which I was impressed at.
I had to leave my head on one side for a while to stop the drops running back out of my ear, though I presume that is normal for most brands of ear drops. Once I lifted my head back up, I felt a really strange sensation in my ear, almost like a crackling sound which I presume was the drops breaking down the wax.
I suppose I expected miracles and was quite disheartened to find it hadn't worked straight away. However, after reading the bottle it does state that you must repeat this procedure twice a day for around 3-4 days before your ears will feel clear again. I did this and I was shocked that a few days later, my ear felt normal again and I could actually hear clearly. Ok, this may have been a coincidence, but I like to think it was the drops that had cleared my ear up and therefore they did do the trick. I do believe the drops cleared the wax as I have not had the problem since, so it feels like the drops did breakdown and disperse of the wax as promised.
These drops are safe to be used by adults, children and the elderly, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women, so its nice to know they don't contain any harsh ingredients which may cause some internal damage as they are ok to be used by a range of people.
The usual common sense warnings though do apply when using a product such as this. These include not using if you have had a perforated or damaged ear drum and don't drink the liquid!
The little bit of liquid that did run, did feel rather greasy again my skin so I would advise you to keep a tissue or towel handy to mop up any excess liquid.
Overall I would recommend this. I was hesitant before using them, but they do seem to have done the trick and have prevented me from a trip to the doctors. They aren't cheap, but as you only need around 4-5 drops a time, the bottle will last a good while before needing replacing. It did provide me with a rather uncomfortable sensation in my ear whilst it was breaking the wax down, but it wasn't painful at all. It did the job though and that's all that mattered to me. For that reason I do recommend you try these drops if you suffer from a similar problem in the future. They provide a quick and easy solution to blocked ears with no fuss and very little mess involved. Recommended.
Summary: A good brand of ear drops
