Advantages: Designed to improve posture and reduce lumber stress. Washable cover.

Disadvantages: Uncomfortable!

As many of you who have read my previous reviews will be aware, I had spinal surgery last year to decompress a prolapsed lumbar disk. The pain I experienced prior to my surgery was unbearable, and I am willing to try anything which will limit my risk of developing further spinal problems later in life. My chiropractor recommended that I think about getting a pelvic tilt wedge cushion to correct my posture and my natural tendency to curve my spine in all the wrong places!!

I found this pelvic tilt wedge cushion on the Physio Supplies Ltd. website for £25.99. It was delivered to my home within about five days.

The wedge is 40 cm x 38 cm x 9cm and so is small enough to fit in an average seat. There is a handle at the thickest part of the wedge for easy transport. The wedge is made from foam of medium density (you can also by a firm density wedge) and although it does squidge down a little when I'm sitting on it, it largely keeps its shape. It has a Pyratex cover which can be completely removed in order to be washed.

Essentially, this wedge sat under my pelvis and thighs so that my knees were higher than my hips, which means that there is less pressure put on the base of my spine. It is designed to provide an 11% tilt which is the degree that is recommended by physiotherapists and chiropractors, although I had no way of assessing whether it achieved this degree of tilt.

I tended to use the cushion while sat at my desk or at a table for any significant length of time. However, I found that the cushion was really uncomfortable because it made me feel like I had to lean forward in order to feel stable. It probably did improve my posture a little, but it did so at the expense of making me feel really uncomfortable - and I wasn't willing to tolerate that.

The manufacturer also recommends using the wedge in the car, but I have to admit that this didn't really work well for me because it made me feel like I was a long way from the steering wheel.....and if I moved my seat closer then my knees got in the way! It did work better when I used it as a passenger though and occasionally I still use this if I'm a passenger on longer car journeys.

Mostly, however, I tend to use my wedge now as something to put my feet on under the table (as I'm quite short) - and this is actually quite comfortable......but obviously not what it's designed for!

I find it difficult to recommend this because it wasn't something that worked for me. Although it may do the job for which it is designed, it is also not comfortable and so I don't think anyone would be inclined to use it very often. My advice instead would be to move regularly and not to stay in the same position for too long.

Summary: Can't recommend.
