Advantages: Very soft
Disadvantages: Only three pairs
These brightly coloured soft as can be earplugs have become my friends in recent years. I travel a lot by plane usually just back and forth from Dublin to Scotland but twice a year I visit New York and that's a long flight. I always used to fly Delta Airlines and the first year I flew with them was four years ago and the quality of service was far better than it is now, but I'm not here to write a review of an airline. The reason I mention them is they used to supply their passengers with dark "delta" red ear plugs just like these. A nice touch I thought as they help cancel out some of the loud noise that can be present on aeroplanes. But come my second trip one year later this nice touch was gone. And seeing I had been expecting them to be on board I had to endure the loud hum of the airline for seven hours, making it hard for me to sleep at all, as I find it difficult to sleep even at home (I'm a very light sleeper and somewhat of an night owl). Since that day I never travel without earplugs and even use them regularly at home, as at night my cats always decide to through a party for some reason.
These stand out from the normal, plain, boring earplugs available as they are cheerfully coloured in bright orange, red and green. The pack of three pairs come in a handy clear plastic box that ensures they stay in one place until used. Of course it's not advisable to place used earplugs back into the same box as the clean, never before used ones for obvious hygiene reasons.
To use these takes no effort at all, most people just plunge right in. But I twist the earplug to make it narrow gently pull the top of my ear upwards using my right hand, then gently insert the plug into my ear canal with my left. I then realise both hands and instantly I can feel the soft earplug unwinding and moulding to the very shape of my inner ear. This molding effect insures a good seal with the ear to block out exterior noise.
These are very comfortable to wear as having an uncomfortable foreign object in your ear as you are trying to sleep wouldn't be advisable. The first night I used them I was very aware they were there but when I woke up during the night I had totally forgotten they in there at all. That's another thing worth adding, they actually stay in. Other brands can become loose and fall out as you sleep. While others can feel like you have hammered a wine cork into each ear, not a pleasant sensation.
These multi coloured earplugs are lovely and soft in the ear and do block out a lot of noise. The only reason I do feel uncomfortable wearing these has nothing to do with the quality of the product but does have something to do with how well they work. I do worry that if the smoke alarm sounded would I be able to hear it. As I said I'm a light sleeper but when using these I can literally slip into a coma. My morning alarm (from my phone) regularly beeps itself flat and that's right by my bedside. So for that reason I wouldn't recommend using these if you already have trouble with your hearing as I have perfect hearing and these block out most sounds even alarms as they have a 35 decibel rating.
But for travel or if you have particularly loud alarms or they are in the same room as you (my smoke alarm is not, it's on the upstairs landing) these are a great product to have.
Also if you have a spouse that you can't stand listening to any longer just pop these in then smile and nod.
