Advantages: Internal maintenance

Disadvantages: Can be hard to swallow

There are times when our insides decide that they are not going to behave as we should like. This can be because of aging, illness, allergies, even the weather and water quality can have an effect.

I had a really, really bad time with food intolerances last year and was desperate to find something that would help my insides to behave normally. Obviously elimination of all the "bad" foods from my diet was a major step, but not enough. So I investigated what would help.

After a great deal of internet research I opted for REGUCOL- it is a Holland and Barrett product and the pack size is 420g, the normal price is over £15- but I have never paid that as it is often one of their half price offers. ( Rumour has it they are reducing the pack size to 350g).

Regucol is a food supplement containing psyllum husk powder, lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium bifidum. Translated that means it is a food supplement which will ensure that your digestive system runs efficiently and also provides natural fibre and friendly bacteria. This will ensure that your bowel movements are normalised and regular. You will be maintaining your digestive system and colon.

The Pysllum is an Indian vegetable grain that is high in fibre. The husks when mixed with water will absorb about twenty times their own weight, thus enabling the removal of colon debris.

The lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium bifidum are both probiotics or as the adverts call them " friendly bacteria". These will correct your bacterial balance and will enable colonic cleansing.

Regucol also contains inulin which is a prebiotic, this is a carbohydrate made from artichokes and is there as it helps the lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium bifidum to grow.

Regucol is suitable for vegetarians and is free from soya, yeast, gluten, corn, wheat, starch, preservatives, artificial colourings and flavourings.

The adult dose is 10g (two heaped teaspoons), twice daily. You must mix the powder with water or fruit juice and drink immediately. It is very very important that you have another two drinks already ready to drink after consuming -and consume them both straight afterwards. The product as you will see swells up and so if you do not drink plenty straight away, you could find yourself choking, as it will swell up and block your throat/oesophagus. Do not be put off by this - I have no problems with it- because I have always followed the instructions. However if you have difficulty swallowing do not use this product.

A child's dose is 5g (one heaped teaspoon), twice daily.

Regucol must be stored in the fridge after opening, and it lasts for ages.

It should be ok to halve the dose after two weeks.

Now I have not said that this is better for diarrhea or constipation, or just for irregular/problematical bowel movements- that is because it sorts them all out- how it knows I cannot answer, it just does.

Now even though it is a food supplement and it works, it should never ever be used as an alternative to getting your diet in order.

Each teaspoon contains only 1 calorie and so little fat, sugar and sodium that it isn't worth a mention. It does however contain 4.4g of fibre.

You can take Regucol at any time of the day, but obviously leaving time between doses - so before breakfast and dinner is an easy way.

It is not harmful so prolonged use is not a problem.

I found that it does make a difference and my insides are working much better. The truth is I feel it is doing me good and that my colon is grateful for the help.

You can buy a pack half the size but that is usually not worth the money as you are better off getting the larger pack at half price.

Summary: Do you look after your car better than your body?
