Samaritan Olive Oil
Advantages: Chemical free, works, cheap
Up until Kai was about 4 months old he used to get really dry skin on the palms of his hands which was flaky and would get easily irritated and sore.
I tried lots of different creams but nothing seemed to help. My fiancés Mum gave me a bottle of this and I'd never heard of it before, nor had it really ever occurred to me that olive oil might help! I had assumed that it was expensive because of the packaging (a glass bottle) & olive oil in general is quite expensive but it is actually really cheap at about £2 for 92ml.
This looks just like normal olive oil and it has a slight smell to it which reminds me of wax crayons. It isn't a very strong smell and the smell of it didn't linger on Kai's skin. Because it is simply a blend of olive oil I never went into a panic attack about whether or not it would irritate his delicate skin and I was happy to use it myself as well.
When his skin was really dry I would apply it straight onto his hands and massage it in, which obviously did leave his hands greasy so I would put his mittens over the top. The oil is quite thick and only a small amount is needed.
Then as kais skin started to become less and less dry with the help of this oil and Zambuk ointment I would just put a few drops of it in his bath water and let him soak in it for as long as he wanted, making sure I didn't put too much in. i still do this once a week because i think it works just as well as the proper bath oil that i have for him.
Before I used this I was using johnsons bath oil which I think was actually drying his skin out even more, whereas this is completely natural. It really helped and even though Kai's palms don't get dry or sore anymore I still use a few drops of this in his bath to keep his skin soft.
I've also used it a lot of times myself in my bath because its more natural (it contains no chemicals at all) than the E45 bath oil that I was using previously and it is just as good. It works well as a hair oil too, I've only used it a few times for this purpose because I use coconut oil but it had the same effect (silky soft & shiny hair).
Summary: Brilliant product
