Advantages: Good for you and baby

Disadvantages: None

As I am currently trying for a baby I am taking care of my health a bit more and the first thing I knew was important was to make sure I got all the vitamins I needed. After reading numerous articles and from information I had already heard I knew that getting enough Folic Acid was the majorly important vitamin.

According to an article I read, Folic Acid is especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth, such as in infancy and pregnancy. Both children and adults require folic acid to produce healthy red blood cells and prevent anemia. The reason why it is good in pregnancy is because it helps protect against a number of congenital malformations including neural tube defects. The article also goes on to say that the protective effect of folate during pregnancy goes beyond NTDs. Supplementation with folic acid has been shown to reduce the risk of congenital heart defects, cleft palate, limb defects and urinary tract anomalies.

With this information in mind I set off to Boots to look for some vitamins. They have their own range of vitamins but the ones that really caught my eye were the Sanatogen vitamins. These have been around for years and seem to be a trusted brand so I decided to try some of these. It also helped that they were on three for two special in Boots that week so my decision was made. The three for two helped as they were fairly expensive but then most vitamins always tend to be quite expensive in my opinion. A tub of 30 tablets was £4.88 and a tub of 90 tablets was £11.25.

I chose the Sanatogen ProNatal vitamins. These are for use before conception, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This vitamin supplement is described as a multivitamin and mineral supplement with folic acid tailored for women planning pregnancy and during. It has 18 essential vitamins. One of those vitamins is Folic Acid and gives the take 400 micrograms which is the recommended daily amount for people in this situation. You should take one of these vitamins daily in order to get the recommended amount of Folic Acid, any more and it could be dangerous so be careful with your intake.

They recommend that you take these tablets for at least three months before trying to get pregnant. The vitamins come in a pink plastic bottle with a pink lid on. They do have a safety feature to them. In order to get the top of you need to squeeze both sides together and then the cap will come off. I think this is great because it means little kids cannot get into the vitamins if you leave them lying around.

This is only my opinion on the vitamins and I am not medically trained at all so I would recommend that before you start any vitamin supplement you wither talk to your doctor or a pharmacist to get the best possible information in regards to you.
