Advantages: Tops up iron levels without causing upset to the stomach
Disadvantages: Metallic taste can be overpowering if not mixed in with fruit juice
During a long period of time I was suffering with symptoms that were causing my throat to be extremely dry and irritated, along with painful and congested sinuses. The illness was relentless and I'm still not completely symptom free 12 weeks later. After several trips to see different doctors I still had no answers, other than it is a viral infection. I wasn't convinced, as I felt fine otherwise and the symptoms were persistent. I considered allergies, and the doctor sent me for some blood work to see if anything could be uncovered.
Three bottles of blood and 2 weeks later, all the allergy tests came back clear. However, the blood tests showed that my blood count was low and that I am anaemic. This would explain why I'm always feeling tired, and low in energy. I thought it was due to the fact that I have little time to rest, and I have a very active toddler to take care of. I have been anaemic before, as I am a fussy vegetarian and my mental health has caused me to struggle to maintain a healthy diet at all times.
Since the beginning of my throat and sinus symptoms 12 weeks ago, as soon as I started to feel unwell I increased my fluid intake, improved my diet and continued to consume three meals a day regardless of how I was feeling. I must admit, the meals were smaller, and I was not consuming any extras. I took extra care to rid me of the symptoms, as being a full time mum I knew I needed to get better fast to be able to care for my son.
Since discovering I was anaemic, the doctor suggested that I take an iron supplement and she provided a prescription. I was rather hesitant to collect the prescription, as I was sick with iron tablets during my first pregnancy. I was given the prescription over the phone, and I had no time to get to the doctors until after the weekend. With this in mind, and the fact that I wasn't in any rush to start taking an iron supplement, knowing they can cause an upset stomach, I decided to pop into Boots whilst in town to have a look if there was anything that would be better.
I browsed the shelves to see what was available, and after carefully and diligently scrutinising the vitamins section I came across the Spatone 100 % natural supplement. The word natural on the front had me take a closer look. After reading the details on the back of the box and understanding that it is an iron-rich natural supplement taken straight from the source, it shouldn't cause any stomach upsets. I decided this was worth a try, and knew it had to be better than the tablets that are far more likely to cause side effects. It is suitable for children over 2 years, men, women and it can help top up iron levels during pregnancy. It retails at £7.99 for a box of 28 sachets and can be purchased from Holland & Barrett's and Boots.
A box of 28 sachets provides enough for a month, although two sachets a day can be taken if needed. The orange sachets have an easy opening at the top to pour the liquid out. It is advised to add the liquid to fruit juice (not grape), as it has a metallic taste, and the vitamin C in fruit juice helps to absorb iron. It recommends taking it on an empty stomach, although it can be taken after food if necessary. Iron is essential for providing energy and supporting the immune system. However, many lack iron in their diet, which is why an iron supplement can help to keep iron levels topped up.
I was hoping that the iron supplement would be effective and easy on my stomach. Feeling rather drained and run down I knew I needed the iron. Plus, I know I don't get enough from my diet. I added the Spatone sachet to a glass of lemon water. I don't generally have any other fruit flavoured drinks, as I generally only drink water, sometimes with a dash of lemon when at home. The iron supplement looks like clear water. It is advised to drink it immediately, due to the metallic taste. I decided not to add too much water, as I wanted to be able to drink it quickly. Wow, it certainly has a metallic taste that takes some getting used to.
I continued taking it with lemon water, and eventually got used to the taste. However, I decided to buy a bottle of apple juice to mix in with it. I was pleasantly surprised that it masks the taste and makes it easier to drink. This is quite good for children, as they needn't know it is in there. Unfortunately my son is adverse to fruit drinks and will only take water, so I would struggle to get him to take this. I think all the family would benefit from taking it to top up their iron levels, however, I know they would all grumble and refuse. They are all far too fussy.
Initially, being my impatient self, I wondered how long it would take before it would start to make a difference. I think I expect everything to happen in an instant. I come to realise a few days later how my memory was improving, and I was much more alert. I felt proud being able to remember something I wanted to share with my partner after being apart for the day. My brain tends to be foggy and my thoughts can sometimes seem jumbled. However, I was thinking more clearly, and was more responsive and alert. This was a great confidence boost, and made a real difference.
I also started to notice my energy levels were on the increase, and I was feeling a lot better for it. I was no longer feeling spaced out and drained all the time. However, I could still do with some quality sleep and rest, as I'm always on the go. My little boy is very high functioning and active, so I need all the energy I can get to keep up with him. I'm really pleased that the Spatone iron supplement has increased my energy levels and has made me more alert; it makes a real difference to my life. I'm also pleased to report that I haven't experienced any adverse reactions or side effects.
As the iron supplement is in handy sachets it makes it easy for me to take one with me when I go out for the day. I add the iron to a bottled drink and shake it up prior to taking it. I've actually been quite good at remembering to take it daily, I think that's because I am feeling the benefits from it. I'm glad I found these, as they are natural and come straight from the source they are better and kinder to the stomach. Each sachet provides a third of your iron intake, which is far more than any tablet provides. If your iron levels are low, two sachets can be taken until your iron levels have been topped back up.
Spatone is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and is free from gluten, lactose, preservatives, artificial colours and sugars.
Each box contains an information leaflet that contains all the required information along with important facts. Their impressive website is crammed with useful information about iron and its importance, as well as giving tips and information about their products.
If you feel your diet lacks iron, or you often feel low in energy, this natural iron supplement is the easiest way to top up iron levels. Mixed in with fruit juice it can hardly be detected.
Summary: A natural iron supplement that makes all the difference
