Advantages: Really good prices for glasses, good selection of frames.
Disadvantages: not very good for contacts, apparently, and you do feel a bit like a widget on an assembly line.
Should I have gone to specsavers?
In a word, yes.
People who know me from this site will probably be able to guess that I need glasses: I watch a lot of movies and TV, and I spend a lot of time in front of the computer. This kind of behaviour is to the eyes what a daily diet of twenty gobstoppers would be to the teeth - it leaves them in need of some regular tender loving care.
The last time I got glasses was about 4 years ago - from Boots, as I recall, and I found it to be a quite expensive process. The cost of the test, the lenses and the frames themselves - as well as some hard-sold extras - brought the price in at over 200 smackers. Ouch. I went crosseyed just paying the bill.
However this specsavers trip was a completely different glasses case.
The eye exam cost nothing (although I think that only applies in Scotland); the (scratch resistant) lenses were absorbed in the cost of the frames, and the frames themselves were only 25 quid! OK, I had to put up with a bit of hard sell for the non-reflective/tinted/polarised lenses, but it wasn't too excessive in the long run.
Additionally, although there was a slight assembly-line feeling to the examination, it was very thorough, and carried out by a qaulified (although disturbingly young) optician.
All in all I would recommend them to anyone for value. 25 quid for some pretty good glasses is a real bargain. I see there have been quite a lot of negative reviews, but these seem to mainly be concerning contact lenses, on which I can't comment, as I think they are the work of the devil. No, aciually it's just that I can't wear them as I have oddly shaped eyes. So maybe I'm the work of the devil.
Summary: I'm glad I went to specsavers.

- 02/07/09 I go to Specsavers too. found them efficient and can offer a large range of frames at reasonable prices. We have four separate optician companies in our town. One had one of its glass doors broken and is now boarded up. I have been soooo tempted for weeks to scribble on the board " Should'ave gone to Specsavers." |
