Advantages: Branches Everywhere. Good range of frames.
Disadvantages: Can be a bit pricey if you add on extras to the normal lenses.
I always had 20-20 vision up to about 18 months ago, when things started to deteriorate. As work pay for a free eye test, how could i refuse to get the eyes tested.
Specsavers is a national optician with branches throughout the Uk and they stock a range of reading glasses, bi focals, vari focals and lots of designer ranges. They carry a good range of childrens glasses too.
Each branch has an Optician who will test your eyes, which can be arranged by telephone appointment, or by visiting one of the branches. When you arrive you have a pre-test and then on to the Optician who will carry out the usual test by looking at a large wall chart full of different letters and numbers. By testing each eye he can see if there is a need for glasses, or stronger glasses than the ones you may be wearing. They can also guide you on the use of Contact lenses.
An adviser will then discuss the options that are available you and will discuss your needs with you. I was shown a multitude of frames that i could choose from and was told that if i bought a pair of glasses, i could have a second pair free. This was welcome, especially as i chose a pair of red or dead designer glasses, in black of course. I was guided through the costs and offered additions to the lenses such as anti-glare and scratch resistant etc.
As the money crept up i decided the lenses and the designer frames were more than enough to pay out for and after a bill of around £175 for the two pairs, i left with a date to come back to pick up the glasses.
When you return, the glasses are available to try on and the adviser will check you are happy with them and carry out any minor adjustments to how they fit.
I think Specsavers offer a good service but i do feel that some of the designer glasses are over priced which is why they can afford to give a second pair of glasses free. I have never received a reminder for another test though and my last test was over 18 months ago.
Summary: Good service for a National Optician

- 25/09/09 What was your prescription finally - reading glasses?
I had my eyes tested at a Boots optician, and though they said I had age related deterioration, they also said the £20 Boots reading glasses I'd bought (not from the optician - the sort that folk into a wee tiny capsule) were sufficient.
