Advantages: Excellent Value, Good Customer Service
Disadvantages: Additional charges could be stated more clearly
Since I can remember I've always been a Boots Optician's girl but finding their prices on the increase I decided to slum it and see if I could find a cheaper but still fashionable bargain at SpecSavers. Every Optician looks the same - lots of glasses & plenty of mirrors. Someone has put far more thought into the layout of SpecSavers however. Instead of glasses displayed by colour they are displayed by price & design. Designs include a section of rimless, ladies & even a mock design range which would certainly give Calvin Klein a run for his money. The biggest advantage as I can see it (no pun intended) is that all prices include the cost of the lenses, and as all frames are labelled VERY clearly with the price (different price bands are given different coloured stickers) this certainly helps with budgeting. On top of this they seem to continually run a 2 for 1 promotion for glasses over £70 in value. When I ordered my glasses I found this to be great as it meant I could have a pair of prescription sunglasses for the first time a luxury I wouldn't normally be able to afford. At this stage I would mention that any additional coatings are an extra cost, however at £10.00 per pair for anti-scratch coating I found this to be a very reasonable price. When I bought my frames I was on my own (I would recommend you drag a truthful friend along if you can) and therefore had to rely on the opinions of the sales assistants. Unlike some other chains who try to push expensive frames & highly coated lenses onto you, the assistant I spoke to at SpecSavers appreciated my budget and tried not to sway to greatly from my price range from the huge range on offer. He gave me advice on the frame colouring to suit my skin tone, frame shape (to match your eyebrow shape apparently) & whether I really needed that super-duper anti scratch/glare/kitchen sink coating on my lenses. The result was a totally different style of glasses to what I would normally
have chosen but a genuinely happy customer whom had walked away with 2 pairs of spec for under a hundred quid. 3 years on I still have the 2 same pairs. They are fantastically comfortable, I can see really well through them (always a bonus) and, yes all I did need was the anti-scratch coating and nothing else which would have been a waste of money. I was very impressed with SpecSavers - their quality, value and customer service were excellent. Since them I have persuaded other family members to use them and they have been equally impressed with the service they have received as well.

- 20/08/02 Excellent stuff - I also used to be a Boots Optitians girl, but discovered a wonderful tiny optitians one day by accident after destroying one of my contacts. I haven't looked back since! (no pun intended) |

- 20/08/02 My dad's a Specsavers fan - but I prefer Vision Express! However, I don;t think there's much to choose between them, and with the new contact lens offers at Specsavers, I might have to be a traitor and switch! Nice opinion! |
