Advantages: A natural, non addictive aid to depression
Disadvantages: none I know of
I have never took Prozac so I cannot back up that common claim.
I tried St Johns Wort when I have felt down, and feel like I am becoming depressed(not deep depression), it does make you feel normal again. It is good when you are specifically worried about something eg. I take it before going to the Dentist, it does help.
Unlike Prescription anti depressants, there is no need to take it every day for 6 months...and wonder, if you feel better because of the medication, or if you would be feeling better now anyway.
With St JOHNS wort you can take when you feel you need it and it is NOT addictive.
It is given on prescription in many countries rather than the likes of Prozac and other anti-depressants, they claim it works.
My friend takes it for PMT as says it helps keeps her calm.
It is also supposed to help with Arthritis, I have an Aunt who takes it for this, and although the Arthritis looks bad to me, she says she has to take it as it really helps her.
It is best to talk to a pharmacist before taking with other prescription drugs as there are a few it can interact with.
If you feel down, depressed, stressed, or nervous about something it is really worth trying rather than a trip to the docs for prescription drugs.
