Tesco Heat Rub
Advantages: Good price and immediate pain relief
Disadvantages: Smells terrible
I have never really had the need or ailment to have to use deep heat before experiencing a quite bad and painful pulled leg muscle last year, since then it has sporadically resurfaced. As I like to grab a bargain and am of the opinion that the majority of own brand products are no different to branded goods I wanted to try the Tesco's own Heat Rub over the more widely known Deep Heat, which was the last heat cream I purchased.
This is an external pain relief cream; the heat rub comes in a tube in a white and burnt orange cardboard box. There is an image of a man's back and shoulders with a heat spot over where he is rubbing in the cream in. The tube itself is again white and orange with a screw on cap. For hygiene reasons this is sealed with a metal cover piece and you pierce the top with the point in the screw cap. Medical instructions and ingredients are on both the box and a leaflet inside.
This cream is intended for use on painful areas caused by things such as backache, muscle sprains, rheumatic pain and other aches. I needed it for a pulled muscle in my leg caused by exercise. To use the cream you simply remove a conservative amount of the ointment and massage into the area that is sore. I say conservative because the first time I used this stuff I put far too much on and my leg felt like it was on fire for a fair amount of time!
The instructions tell you to apply a thin layer of the cream on the desired area and rub in until the cream has completely been absorbed into your skin; the cream is white coloured so you can see when this has happened. This is to make sure that the pain relief starts working straight away and also to avoid getting it on clothes. I find it only takes a minute for this to happen. As soon as you start massaging this onto your skin you can feel a tingling sensation and a very warm feeling, hence heat rub. The pain relief is immediate and you mind is drawn away from the pain and into the soothing feeling of the cream.
If you have never used one of these creams before be warned the smell is quite strong, it's a very medicinal smell that is not particularly pleasant. However the pain relief makes it bearable. I would certainly be in agony if I had not used this on my pulled leg muscle.
I really like this heat rub and found it to be no better or worse than the original Deep Heat product other than in price. This Tesco version comes in a 35g tube and costs £2.35. The product lasts a long while due to the fact you do not need to use too much of it so it is great value for money. In conclusion I would definitely but this over the branded versions.
