Tesco Heat Rub
Advantages: Easy to use and effective at reducing pain
Disadvantages: The smell and doesn't assist with intense pain
I have suffered with lower back pain for the past 6 years following a car accident and whilst my GP is more than happy to prescribe me Tramadol I am concerned about the long term effects and the fact that the drug is highly addictive. Over the years I have tried various methods to alleviate my pain with the most effective being a TENS machine, but unfortunately, I am limited to the amount of uses per day. I find some days are worse than others, particularly if I have been carrying out housework or gardening as the pain will move into my buttocks and legs. I have used many of the heat rubs that are available; one of which belongs to Tesco and this review discusses my experience with using it.
I must admit that I'm always a little apprehensive when trying out these type products for the first time, particularly as years ago I can recall using a spray version, which caused a considerable reaction to my poor skin. The product is boxed and presented to us in a 35g tube and is intended solely for external use. The tube has been hygienically sealed and to open the small pointed section contained within the lid needs to be gently pushed to pierce the protective covering.
We are instructed to apply a 10 - 40mm layer of the good consistency white coloured cream onto the skin, so I apply a thin layer onto my lower back and gently rub until it has fully penetrated, which takes only a short space of time. As soon as the cream makes contact with my skin I am able to witness a pleasant warming and slight tingling sensation, which can be described as wonderfully soothing and comforting.
Care needs to be taken not to make contact with clothing, so I generally use the product in the evenings when I have stepped out of the bath or shower when my skin is still warm and my body relaxed. I cannot admit to being fond of the aroma of these types of product, as they make me feel a little nauseous as they are considerably overpowering, but this is a small price to pay for some pain relief. However, if you are suffering with a blocked up nose at the time the aroma is most certainly beneficial for clearing the nasal passages! The cream can be applied two to three times per day and your hands need to be washed immediately after use to avoid transferring the product elsewhere. The cream isn't particularly greasy on my skin and if I'm honest I find myself forgetting I've applied it.
What I find favourable with the cream is that it offers almost immediate results, which last for a good few hours. However, when I find my pain more intense the cream is only slightly effective, so obviously it depends on the level of pain you are experiencing. Only a small application is used on each occasion with the cream being suitable for the relief of various types of pain such as rheumatic pain, backache and muscles aches and sprains. There is an accompanying leaflet that explains all of the do's and don'ts and it is advisable to read it prior to using for the first time.
You can purchase Tesco Heat Rub at a cost of £2.35 for a 35g tube and I had expected their own product to be cheaper than the branded names. However, at the time of writing Deep Heat Rub is a penny cheaper for the same size tube and having used both products I cannot admit to there being any difference. I do not believe in copying lengthy lists of ingredients into my reviews unless I have suffered any adverse effects, which was not the case for me. This is an extremely effective product and greatly assists me to manage my pain, so it gets a recommendation from me.
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
