Advantages: Free eye test.

Disadvantages: Can't reglaze own frames. Lenses expensive.

Recently I received some Clubcard vouchers in the post pertaining to Tesco Opticians. One of the vouchers was for a free eye test, so I thought I may as well give them a go since I had nothing to lose!

Booking an appointment was done via a call to an 0845 number. I was able to book an appointment convenient to me, within about 10 days of calling.

Upon arrival, I handed over my voucher & after only a couple of minutes wait, I was taken through for some initial tests (such as the horrid 'puff of air' glaucoma test!). After a couple more minutes of waiting, I was called for the main test.

The optician wasn't overly-friendly, but was efficient in the eye test. The test itself didn't seem to take as long as usual, but the finished prescription recommended certainly highlighted the deterioration in my sight & it was good to be able to read the bottom line of print once more!

I was provided with a handwritten prescription & asked if I would like to browse the glasses on offer. I actually wasn't i the market for a brand new pair of specs, but Tesco don't offer a re-glazing service, unless the glasses were originally purchased from Tesco. So, I had a quick look around, but nothing took my eye, even though prices seemed fairly reasonable (& included standard lenses), with designer specs from around £70/£80 upwards (& on a buy one get one half price offer).

I considered buying some prescription sunglasses, since prices for sunglass frames started at only £20, but the lenses for those would have been £80 (which is ridiculous when you can buy sunglass lenses online for £22!).

So, I left empty-handed (aside from my prescription), & hope to find an online re-glazing service. All-in-all not a bad service for free, but nowhere near as thorough as other opticians....

Summary: OK for just an eye test.

As a glasses-wearer myself, I was hoping for a better showing from Tesco here - though personally I stick to my independent optician for his friendly service. Well-balanced reviewing.

Will Tesco not stop at anything to corner every market?
Well reviewed.
