Advantages: Excellent value for money, professional service, good range of glasses

Disadvantages: None!

I've felt for a while that my eyesight was deteriorating but it's been quite gradual so I had just adapted to sitting closer to the screen in meetings which is where my lack of focus was most prevelant.

My job role changed which meant I had to do lots of driving and when recently, I noticed I was struggling to read road signs until I was pretty much on top of them, I decided it was time to get sorted and a some Tesco Optician vouchers landing on my door mat persuaded me make the call there and then.

I was shocked and pleased, after dialling the 0845 number and providing my location, to be offered a choice of three appointments that very day! I selected one to coincide with my lunch break and headed on down to Scunthorpe Tesco Extra with slight trepidation.

I was greeted by a friendly lady and once I had confirmed who I was, I showed her the set of vouchers I had received. They comprised: Voucher for a free eye test, voucher for 500 Clubcard points on any pair of glasses and a voucher for £10 off any designer frames. I think the sales advisor was a little shocked and said herself what a fantastic offer it was!

I sat in the waiting area for about 2 minutes before the optician called me through for the obligatory 'puff of air' test. Being my first eye test, I gave a little squeal of shock with the first blast but the optician remained professional and informed me what he was checking for a what would happen next.

I was taken through to another room where the official eye test would take place. My eyesight was worse than I thought, I could barely read past the second line of the letter chart! Next I was adorned with a pair of huge, uncomfortable, black plastic glasses while the optician interchanged various lenses and asked me to assess the improvement it made whilst looking at green and red dots.

All in all, the appointment lasted about 15 minutes before I was handed my prescription (I am short sighted and illegal to drive without glasses!) The optician asked if I would be looking to buy frames today however there was no pressure from his or the sales advisor to buy there and then.

I did intend to buy, I couldn't not with the vouchers I had to hand! I was impressed with the designer range available, brands included Vera Wang, Storm, Red or Dead amongst others and the prices ranged from £89 to £159 and they were all on buy one, get one free. Tesco also have their own range of frames and I was pleasantly surprised by the selection, however, I'm a bit of a label fiend so made my choice from the designer end.

I asked the sales advisor for advice in relation to the size and shape of frame that would suit me. I have a round face that I really didn't want to be accentuated! She was helpful and friendly and said she felt the same and showed me her glasses of choice. I tried on about 5 or 6 pairs and received honest advice on each pair.

I plumped for 2 pairs of Morgan glasses. One square framed, slightly delicate, half-rimmed which I thought would be good for every day wear. Next I was slightly more bold and opted for a pair with fuschia pink frames - I love these!

I was told they would be ready in 7-10 days however I was welcome to check if they'd arrived sooner if I was in doing my shopping. About 5 days later I happened to be instore and to my surprise, the glasses had just arrived and were ready and waiting for me!

I paid on ordering and my total came to £79 for an eye test and 2 pairs of designer frames. I also received an additional 500 points thanks to the vouchers that had arrived in the post.

In summary, I received a pleasant and professional service from Tesco and the specs were excellent value. I will definitely be back in 2 years time for my re-test and hopefully will be able to find an offer to meet the one I was lucky enough to receive this year!

Summary: Look out for vouchers in the post.

Doesn't sound too bad. I have much worse eyesight than you, and so lenses cost a fortune, so prefer to stick with the local optician I know, but Tesco do at least seem to be competent here.
