Advantages: Works most of the time

Disadvantages: Resembles a tampon

Last week I came down with a cold and although it didn't last very long, I did need a little bit of relief. My memory told me that I had a Vicks inhaler lying around somewhere which I have had for a number of years now, so I went and sought it out.

The thing itself resembles a small tampon without the cardboard insert and it's made out of plastic. The top of the plastic has a hole to let the smell out. I have taken this apart many times as I like to fiddle with things so I can tell you that inside the tube is a small, soft tube that resembles a cigarette butt. This is covered in the Vicks and that's what you smell when you inhale. They cost around £2.50 which seems rather expensive but like I have said, I've had mine for years and if you can get inside it then you can re-coat the butt so it goes on for longer.

This thing really works for me and I find it easier to have around than endless bits of tissue that are coated in Vicks or Olbas Oil. It almost always breaks through my nasal passages so I can smell the Vicks scent but it doesn't always succeed in unblocking my nose for long periods of time.

The one thing that I hate about this little device is how unattractive it looks when you are using it. You shove it up your nose, cover the other nostril and sniff as hard as you can until you burst a blood vessel. Now this must look very strange to passers-by when you are in the middle of town shoving a tampon up your nose. I had a woman once tell me that I was shoving it up the wrong orifice (only joking but it would be funny!). For this reason. I only tend to use it around the house.

The other thing is that it's a little unhygienic and can't relaly be used by other members of the family.

All in all a strange little thing that does work but ladies, don't get it confused with you tampons because this thing isn't capable of catching any fluid!

Summary: A good but strange invention
