Advantages: A return to vitality, Inexpensive
Disadvantages: None that I have found
Over my lifetime I have seen a sure and steady improvement in the expectations of women. Decade by decade we have grasped our independence and accepted as right our equality with the hunky members of our species. For some of my generation it has been a rather bewildering experience, to be accepted one faltering step after another. Others have leapt into the previously closed world of men with an aggressive challenge. Mostly though we have moved with increasing confidence through our lives, taking our due and hoping that we lose none of our femininity on the way.
As we graduate towards and eventually through middleage, we look back at the previous generations of our sex and delight that we do not age as they did. Much of this is attitude, a refusal to be consigned to the rear of things because we are no longer able to bear children. Witness the many women who partner younger men nowdays.
For all this, attitude is not always enough. Sure we do not feel any less feminine or sexy just because the grey hairs have to be disguised, or our shape has sneakily rearranged itself. But once oestrogen, that hormone of feminine vitality, decreases it becomes harder work. The energy which once had us rushing through life gladly dissipates. The bones are in danger of becoming brittle as in osteoporosis, and memory is not always what it was.
The miracle of HRT is of great benefit but not for everyone and can have unacceptable side effects for some. Having discovered this for myself and feeling increasingly drained, I looked idly round the Boots supplement counter and lit on a white packet with pink writing called Menopace. After reading the information on the pack I tried it. Three days later I was back on the road to my old self. When I ran out and did not replace the capsules straight away my energy declined, and life began to drag again. This was some years ago and, although supplements and vitamins come and go, I would not be without my dai
ly Menopace capsule.
Menopace is made by Vitabiotics whose slogan is "Where Nature meets Science". The contents of the product include vitamins B complex, zinc and magnesium among 22 nutrients. These substances are used by the body in the production of GLA (gamma linolenic acid) a precursor of the hormone like substances which help regulate changes in hormone balance. This last is a quote from their website. I read from this that the body is fooled into believing that the hormones are still there. Despite the fact that there are no hormones and all substances are natural ,antioxidents help balance cholesterol in the blood and maintain strong bones; collogen in the skin is prevented from reducing and the nervous system is maintained. The information on the Vitabiotics website is impressive. I would reiterate that all substances are natural and no animals have been used in testing. Vegetarians can take it with confidence. An interesting point is that folic acid is present. This has recently been given publicity as an important need in the daily diet of the older woman.
The dose is one capsule per day (dose not to be exceeded) after a meal. The supplement should not be taken on an empty stomach. It is recommended that the dose be taken with a glass of cold water. When a friend of mine said that she could not take cold water after a meal I emailed Vitabiotics. It would seem that the instruction is just for those who may have a problem swallowing. Just as well as I had been throwing it down my throat with a sip of tea for years.
This aid to womens' health is surprisingly inexpensive. Thirty tablets cost £5.85 and 90 tablets £14.75. Most chemists stock Menopace. Although designed to work at the time of menapause and can be taken alongside HRT, it is invaluable for the rest of a woman's life. I am 62 and smoke. A vegetarian who tries to keep to a sensible diet, I frequently lapse into ready meals. Today I was up at 7a
m and have since then spent the day tending to my horse, including scrubbing out his stable, worked for several hours in the garden between dooyooing, and it is now past midnight. From time to time I return to work for a week to stand in for the owner of a busy filling station. I am frequently told that I look younger than my years. This could be genetic of course, but there you go! From past experience I know that my daily Menopace has been a help to keep things going.
Do have a look at their website and decide whether it could be for you.
