Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, which means it is found in foods such a margarine, oily fish such as mackerel and herring(also a source of Omega3 fatty acids),milk and eggs.The main source of Vitamin D for humans though is sunlight as it is absorbed in an action of the sun on your skin.
Vitamin D is lost and damaged when food products are stored in light conditions or are cooked at a high temperature for a long period.
It is important to include Vitamin D in our daily diet as it controls the absorbtion of calcium into our bodies and aids the absorbtion or phosphurus, both of which are necessary to build strong bones and teeeth.
Deficeincy of these Vitamin D,Calcium and Phosphurus can lead to bone disease including Rickets(in children),Osteomalacia(adult form of rickets) and Osteoporosis(mostly in elderly women).At risk groups for these dietary diseases are peole who do not get much daylight ,perhaps someone who was housebound or worked indoors all the time.It is very important to maintain a healthy intake of these vitamins taking a supplement if you think you are lacking as although you may not suffer in the earlier stages of your life, the diseases I have named are painful and (in some cases)disabiling.
