Advantages: When applied to small wounds aids healing and reduces scarring.

Disadvantages: I haven't found any.

I am not a great one for taking vitamin supplements. I tend to think that a healthy diet will provide what we need and that a lot of the promotion of vitamins is simply a money spinning hype.

I am not going to go into the properties and claims for Vitamin E oil.

I would though, like to share with you something that might help in treating minor burns and injuries.

A few years ago I got a bad burn on my hand from melted plastic. (Getting a hedgehog out of a garden fire! But that's a rant for another day!) The burn covered about a third of the back of my hand. It hurt like mad and as I was away working at the time I couldn't easily get access to a doctor.

We did the right things, keeping it under running cold water until well after it went numb, then keeping it dry and clean. I was sure I would be scarred.

The next day a colleague recommended I apply some vitamin E oil. She got one of the little capsules, pierced it with a pin and squeezed a small amount of the oil out over the dry burn. I was a bit sceptical but let her get on with it. She gave me a few more capsules so that I could repeat the process over the coming days. Which I did.

What amazed me was that it was possible to see the oil working on the burn. It became less red and inflamed and healed far more quickly than I had expected it to. Plastic burns are usually quite deep but the wound healed without much scarring at all. Just a few silvery lines.

Since then I have used it to aid in healing for minor burns, mostly from the iron or the oven shelves. Once the burn is dry the oil can be applied a couple of times a day until it is healed. It really does speed the healing process and reduces scarring.

There is no smell and the oil is absorbed easily.

Vitamin E oil capsules can be bought in health shops and most major chemists. They cost about £3.00 for a hundred capsules. There is no need to buy the expensive branded ones, the cheaper ones work just as well.

It is worth while keeping some of these in the house, they keep for a long time and are a cheap and effective healing aid for minor skin injuries especially small burns.

Summary: A slightly unusual use for a capsule. Try it and see what you think.

Great review and very helpful. I scalded my arm recently and will try this once the dressing comes off.
