Disadvantages: None

Many of us may experience periods of time where our intake of various vitamins and minerals is well below the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). This usually leads to varying forms of symptoms that can usually be rectified by bolstering the intake of the affected vitamin or mineral.

Vitamin E is one vitamin that, thankfully, majorities of people do not suffer from any deficiency since the basic requirement is found in many foods that we normally consume.

Vitamin E is required by the body as it is an antioxidant that protects your cells against the effects of free radicals, which damage by-products of the body's metabolism. Free radicals can also cause cell damage. It also improves circulation and accelerates tissue repair. Thus Vitamin E is also found in many toiletries such as shampoos, lotions, rubs etc.

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of Vitamin E stands at 15mg (22 I.U.) for a normal adult. For pregnant women the allowance is the same but for lactating women i.e. after pregnancy, the allowance increases to 19mg (28 I.U.)

As mentioned earlier the RDA is generally secured from commonly eaten foods, which include; fats & oils, eggs, dairy products, meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, fruits, grain products, nuts and several others.

Some foods contain higher levels than others but generally due to the general scope of products that contain it, we all get our RDA.

You might say then why is it that many manufacturers produce medicaments that care specific to Vitamin E or contain high levels of Vitamin E.

The reason is because first and foremost preliminary research has led to the widely held belief that Vitamin E may prevent or delay the coronary heart disease. Vitamin E helps to limit the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol (Bad cholesterol) and also may prevent the formation of blood clots. Both of these could lead to heart attacks.

A recent survey has associated a 30% to 40% reduction in heart
disease by those with higher Vitamin E intake.

Vitamin E is also an antioxidant that helps protect against the damaging effect of free radicals. Free radicals contribute to the development of chronic diseases including cancer. It is also suggested that it may protect against the development of cancers by enhancing the part of the immune system related to this area.

Several surveys have concluded that high intake of Vitamin E has significantly decreased the incidence rates of prostate cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer.

Secondly it is has been proven that a high intake of Vitamin E has no significant effect on your general health. These tests were conducted taking into account dosages of around 800 I.U. on a daily basis.

On this basis many people take Vitamin E in various strengths ranging from 100 I.U. to 1,000 I.U. Taking into accoun that the RDA is only 22 I.U., we are talking about between 5 to 50 times the RDA.

There are several products on the market and the one that appears to have the best overall characteristics is the Seven Seas Antioxidant Vitamin E capsules. These are available in 200 I.U. and 400 I.U. The 200 I.U. type comes in a pack size of 90 capsules and the 400 I.U. comes in pack size of 60 capsules. The 200 I.U./90 capsules go for£5.35 and the 400 I.U./60 capsules go for £5.75. They are packed in cylindrical plastic bottles with a red colour cap.

Seven Seas is a very reputable brand and the product quality is excellent and guaranteed. It is also available at almost all pharmacies and certainly at all Boots shops.

Boots also do a 1000 I.U. capsule one and also a 100 I.U. one in chewable tablet form.

Overall Vitamin E is a very important Vitamin, as are all the others, that plays a major part in the well being of the body. The added expectations that it helps with the heart and cancer will surely make this one to look out for in the years ahead.

Nice, interesting, and making me think that I'd better start taking something that gives me my RDA.
