Advantages: useful, stylish, on sale

Disadvantages: Can be pricey!

I was fed up with my unpredictable old manual scales, so when I decided to shift a few pounds I decided to purchase a set of electronics. Being fond of Weight Watchers products, I thought it would be a good idea to get my hands on some of their scales, and bought the Body Fat Precision Electronic Scales.

The scales themselves are two shades of silver, with little ovals for your feet (see further functions). With manual scales you need to use them on flat, hard surfaces, but here you are provided with detachable 'carpet feet' so you can use these on various floors (which is great because it means I can use them in the privacy of my own room!). Before you weigh yourself, you need to choose which measurements you wish the scales to use by moving the switch underneath, selecting from Kg, lb and Stone. To turn it on after you have removed the tag from under the battery provided, you simply apply slight pressure to the top of the scales. Once the LCD screen is displaying 0:0, it's time to get on. Stepping on and placing your bare feet on the little metal ovals, your weight will be displayed on the screen. You can then step off, and after about half a minute, the screen will turn itself off (self switch-offing machines?! We really are becoming lazy, aren't we!).

Fortunately, these scales don't just measure your weight alone. There is a special function where you can save data of up to ten people into the machine's memory, which can help you to monitor your progress. You need to program the scales first if you wish to use it this way. When you turn it on, you need to follow the instructions in the manual provided in order to set it up ready for weighing, then you are set to go.

After your age, gender and height appears on the screen, the next thing displayed is your weight. Then it's type for the Analysis. Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is shown , followed by your Body Fat (bF) in both percentage and weight. Finally, you will se your percentage of body water. This is why it is important to use the scales barefoot so a more accurate reading can be taken. Though you need to take it into consideration that the temperature of your feet can affect the readings a little!

Under each of these readings will be a coloured strip; yellow, green or red. Each colour indicated the 'danger' levels. For example, if your BMI displays 16.5%, then a yellow strip will appear telling you that this is dangerously low. Or if your bF is shown as 30%, it will beam a bright red to warn you that this is quite high. These readings are quite clear and easy to understand, in my opinion.

So are they accurate? As I said, the temperature of your feet can affect the water reading, however I've had few real problems myself. Though, saying that, I weighed myself three times in the space of ten minutes and got three rather different readings. I think the scales were just tired and needing a nap though as I've had no issues since.

Weight Watchers scales can be quite pricey, and these can be found at around £30. However, I was fortunate enough to find my at £15 in an Argos sale. If you shop around you may find a bargain too, but don't expect to pay a small £5 that you can for manual scales.

I'd definitely recommend these scales. Not only are they stylish, but they're incredibly useful and quite reliable too. I don't know how I ever managed without them!
