Disadvantages: None at all
Put a bit of metal in your life or should I say put a bit of metal in your stomach. I am referring to Zinc, which is a very important mineral and yet is so very underestimated. This is probably due to the lack of public knowledge to its importance and many benefits to our sustained health. Good sources of zinc are red meat, chicken, fish and seafood. Nuts, eggs and yeast also have good levels of zinc. However these are not nearly enough to make up the recommended daily allowance. Zinc is a mineral that the body quickly absorbs and therefore the small levels that are acquired from food consumption are promptly used and are therefore mostly present at lower than acceptable levels in most persons. Those more likely to suffer from zinc deficiency are those that consume very little meat, chicken and seafood and more so those that are vegetarians. Zinc deficiency is not something that is visible or felt by the body in a short period of time. It is something that will affect you over a longer period and thus maintaining a recommended intake is essential for all of us. Some of the symptoms of zinc deficiency are first and foremost a weakened immune system, which leaves you open and most susceptible to infections and diseases. Other symptoms are night blindness, loss of smell, falling hair, brittle nails, skin problems, sleep disturbances etc. Men may experience problems with fertility, while women may experience irregular periods. Children with too little zinc may have stunted growth and slow sexual maturity. A good level of zinc generally alleviates all of these problems and is needed by the body to help in healing and maintaining healthy body tissues, since zinc is essential to the formation of cells. The recommended daily allowance of Zinc is 15mg for men and 12mg for women. Zinc tablets or lozenges are available at all pharmacies and in many cases are available in conjunction with
other vitamins or minerals. However if taking them in this way you should make sure that you are getting the required daily allowance. A 50mg Zinc tablet will yield an average of 15mg of Elemental Zinc. A pack of 50 tablets will cost on average around £2.87. Although slightly on the high side the benefits obtained far outweigh this. As mentioned earlier in this opinion those that are more likely to benefit from zinc are those on slimming diets, those with low meat, chicken and seafood intake and those who are vegetarians. So those of you who are experiencing frequent infections, slow healing of wounds, lack of appetite, loss of taste or smell, impotency and skin problems, then all of these symptoms point in the direction of zinc deficiency and is something that can be corrected with the minimal amount of fuss or fervor. So what are you all waiting for, put a bit of metal in your life. You will all be glad you did.
