Jakemans Blackcurrant Menthol Soothing Menthol Sweets
by Holland1
I had a cold recently, and as I couldn't take anything medicated due to being pregnant, I stocked up on menthol and natural remedies. These Jakemans throat lozenges are available in several different flavours, but I chose the blackcurrant ones because at least they would taste nice and I had already chosen some more medicinal tasting ... lozenges such as Fisherman's Friend and Lockets.
The lozenges are packaged as though they are boiled sweets, which I suppose they are essentially. They come in a 100g bag, which cost me 59p in Superdrug. I thought this was a bit of a bargain to be honest. They are individually wrapped which is handy if you're popping out and just want to throw a few in your handbag or pockets instead of having to carry the whole bag. I quite like the style of the Jakeman's brand, as the packaging is quite traditional looking, a bit like old style sweets but with a menthol twist.
The sweets are boiled so they don't have that soft centre you find in the likes of Lockets or Halls Soothers. This means they are well suited to sore throats, as they give you something to suck on which lasts a good while and also soothes your throat for a little while afterwards. The blackcurrant ones taste really nice, and the menthol is quite subtle, although it does give your sinuses a bit of a blast. I find they are recognisable as blackcurrant, and they're not overly sweet like some of these boiled sweets can be.
The best thing about these lozenges is that they last a long time, so if you're struggling with a sore throat these will take your mind off it for a good ten minutes whilst you're sucking, and then for about an hour afterwards. The only downside is that I find they are quite large at first, so I find it difficult fitting them in my mouth comfortably. This isn't an issue if I'm at home, but at work I find it awkward speaking on the phone when the inevitable happens and someone calls me just after I've popped one into my mouth.
I would say these helped with my sore throat rather than my sinuses, although I have had various issues with my sinuses since falling pregnant, so I'm not sure there is any one solution for this. I find these a really pleasant way of soothing a sore throat, and to be honest I'd be happy to have these even without the sore throat as they taste so nice!
If you're not keen on the sound of blackcurrant, they also come in lemon & honey, cherry, blueberry, menthol eucalyptus and the original throat and chest variety. I've tried a couple of the other flavours and they've never disappointed, so I would recommend these lozenges to help with mild sore throats.

Beecham's Germolene
by Whizz11
With an adventurous little boy and girl in our house who like to run and jump and get into mischief, we have a lot of cuts and scrapes which is why I always keep a tube of Germolene on hand in our medicine cabinet for those oh so frequent times it is needed.
Germolene is an antiseptic cream with local anaesthetic which can ... help prevent infection, numbs pain and helps healing. I think it really is a magic cream and in fact my kids actually call it Mummy's magic cream and always ask for it if they have an ouchy!
The cream comes in a handy tube with a lid that you screw off at the top so although it doesn't have a child friendly seal it is quite hard for them to take the top off if they are not good as twisting things yet. The cream is white and fairly thick which is good because when you apply it to a cut or a graze I find it sits well over the top of the affected area and really gives it a protective barrier. THis is good when my little ones have just had a graze and don't really need a plaster or anything but still need that protective layer to stop any dirt getting into the wound.
You are meant to rub the cream is gently so what I usually do is rub some in and then lay a bigger bit of cream over the top to really give it a lot of healing power. I do this if I am going to put a plaster or bandage over the wound. The cream has a very distinctive antiseptic smell to it, it's not too overpowering but you can smell a strong smell that lasts for a little while after you have applied it.
When I put this cream on myself I can feel the area I have applied the cream to going a bit numb so I think this really helps to take a bit of the pain away, especially if you have suffered from a burn. On the back of the tube it says, "Germolene antiseptic cream's dual action is an effective treatment for minor cuts and grazes, minor burns, scalds and blisters, stings and insect bites, spots and chapped or rough skin."
I find when I apply this to a little cut or graze that my children have it really does help to speed up the healing time and makes the area better. A wonderful hard working cream that every home should have. Read the complete review |
