Advantages: No drugs to swallow
Disadvantages: Makes your eyes water.
I've got a headache! Sounds familiar? Most people suffer with headaches at some time or other, some are very real and painful others may just be an excuse! I'm concentrating on the real headaches today and just what you can do to rid yourself of the pain.
Tension headaches
****************
Tension headaches are typically caused by the busy lives we lead, both at work and home. They appear to be more common in women than men and it is estimated that around half of all women suffer from at least one tension headache every two weeks. Have you ever felt as if someone had put a tight band across your forehead? and pain at the back of your head and neck? Chances are that was a tension headache.
What do you do?
*************
Many people don't like swallowing pills all the time, especially when headaches keep on recurring, but just to keep going you feel you need to do something to relieve the pain. Everyone around you suffers when you have a headache, you shout at your family more, may be short with your colleagues or people you are dealing with, you may make mistakes at work. So what else can you do to help? I bought some 4head, and tried that instead of my usual cocktail of tablets.
What is 4head?
************
4head is a colourless and non-greasy application, it is specially designed to be portable and is carried easily in a pocket or handbag. The neat and handy applicator stick - a bit chunkier than a tube of a lipstick - is convenient for use whenever a headache creeps up, whether at work, home or on the move. It is 100% Levomenthol, a substance used in many cold remedies. Levomenthol has mild local anaesthetic, cooling and decongestant properties and is often included in cough and cold remedies to act as a decongestant. It is not fully understood how it produces its effect.
The stick contains 3.6 g of the active ingredient, levomenthol, and most people know the smell of menthol. It clears our nasal passages, almost like years ago people passed the smelling salts, when someone had an attack of the vapours!
4head can be used by adults, the elderly and children. But I would think care should be taken with children and if they get frequent headaches then discuss with their doctor.
Advantages of 4head
*****************
No water is needed to swallow tablets, nor do you need to have eaten first and it is easy to apply, and in case the headache lingers you don't have to wait for several hours before reapplying, no danger of overdose here, but there is a warning that it shouldn't be used excessively. I find swallowing tablets difficult, so I'm grateful that I have found a product which reduces popping pills. Using 4head also helps you to avoid the prospect of side effects that can be associated with painkillers taken orally such as the possibility of stomach irritation with aspirin.
There are no confirmed reports demonstrating evidence of interactions between the use of 4head and other medicines. However, 4head should not be used at the same time as any other treatments applied to the forehead or if there is any skin condition present on the forehead. It can also be used when taking analgesics too, so if you suffer with migraine and take your usual medication this may help as well.
What do you do?
*************
Remove outer cap and, before use, also remove the small protective inner cap from the top of the dispenser. Twist the dispenser base clockwise, whilst holding the upper section, until the levomenthol protrudes a little from top of dispenser.
Apply gently across the forehead as required (taking care to avoid the eyes). Retract the stick, replace the cap and lid and wait! Nothing happened to me the first time, I expected to feel something immediately and I reapplied! *^*#~**WOW! I got results! I realise it isn't instant but results are really quick, and within a few seconds your forehead feels cool and tingly. Patience is a virtue! One I obviously don't have! This is the analgesic reaction and pain is soon relieved, the pain signals are blocked and your muscles relax.
Read Instructions before Use!
************************
Do you read the leaflets in tablet boxes? No I thought not, I'm not very good either, but I did glance at the Instructions.
Here are a few important pieces of information
When NOT to use 4head :-
DO NOT use if you are sensitive to levomenthol. 4head should not be used if the skin of the forehead is cut, broken or abnormal in any other way (e.g. cases of acne, eczema or other skin conditions).
For your safety
• DO NOT PUT IN THE MOUTH OR SWALLOW.
• No evidence of associated side-effects has been demonstrated during use in pregnancy or lactation, however, no safety data for such use is available.
• The levomenthol in 4head may cause hypersensitivity reactions including contact dermatitis.
• As with all medicines, this is for your use only.
• For external use only.
Stop using 4head if it feels uncomfortable. If you experience any other undesirable effects, seek medical advice.
If 4head is accidentally swallowed, seek medical attention.
How to store 4head
****************
Always replace the caps after use. Store 4head away from sources of heat, and where children cannot see or reach it. Do not store above 25°C. This never used to be a problem in our country, but it is getting warmer, so don't leave in the sun in your car! This product should not be used after the expiry date shown on the dispenser label. Mine, and I have had it several months, lasts until October 2007.
How much does 4head cost?
***********************
It is a long time since I bought mine and I paid just under £5, but I have seen it advertised now for £5.95 but as it has at least 100 applications it is very reasonably priced. Try eBay for a bargain or shop around.
What is the verdict?
****************
I keep this in my bag and use if I get a headache, I apply my4head as soon as I feel the pain, and usually it clears the pain avoiding the necessity of tablets, or worse a migraine and being sick. Previously I waited before taking tablets and then the headache took hold and it was too late! I am careful not to apply just before driving as it can affect your eyes.
There have been occasions when it hasn't worked, but the majority of times I have found it has cleared the pain or really helped.
A word of warning! Remember you have applied it, because once your headache disappears you forget and on holiday last summer, I went into the shower and as I washed my hair I ended up with my eyes stinging from the menthol! I now wash it off first to avoid eye contact!
If you know someone who suffers with frequent headaches why not buy them a 4head and you never know it might change their (and your!) life. No more excuses - I've got a headache!
Summary: Menthol stick, easy to apply and effective in clearing headaches.

- 17/03/07 I recently bought this after trying a cousin's 4Head & it does help, although I still need to take my Migraleve too. |

- 23/02/07 Nominated for a crown by me because I have always wondered about this product and now you told me about it in detail :) I would prefer to try this before pills as well. I only take about one tablet every 6 months though...I try and avoid headache triggers first but sometimes just sit it out. Might try this! |
