Advantages: Really helps on mild to moderate tension headaches
Disadvantages: No good for thumping headaches or migraines, quite pricey
As someone suffering with bipolar I have to take a right concoction of pills each day to help keep me well. I try and avoid taken other pills unless necessary but I don't cope well with headaches!
4head is a pain relief stick whose main ingredient is a natural preparation of levomenthol .
This stick is colourless and certainly not greasy with a slightly peppermint aroma. Because it is a natural preparation you don't have to wait 4 hours between use - you can top up as needed - and it doesn't interfere with any other medications.
I decided to give it a whirl a while ago whilst suffering from seemingly endless bouts of tension headaches. You remove the cap, twist the base of the stick and then wipe your forehead with the stick. I would advise not using too much as there is a sensation which occurs - cooling, slight tingling, when applied and you don't want too much.
The idea behind it is the levomenthol relaxes the blood vessels near the surface which, after the initial sensation is felt, causes pain relief - it also claims this helps relax your neck and head muscles which are a help for tension headaches - I would agree with this claim from personal useage. Although it can be used by children you should check with your doctor before giving it to them in my opinion. Also if you have sensitive skin you should try very sparingly at first.
It comes in a small purple packet, and looks distinctly like a stubby lipstick with the words 4head in big white letters on the packet. It costs between 4 and 5 pounds for a 3.6g stick which does last a very long time and because of its size it can live in the depths of your handbag or inside your jacket pocket.
As with all things, if the symptoms persist seek medical advice, but for tension headaches I do find it works really well and is far better than popping ibuprofen at the first sign.
I don't find this helps with headaches that are not based at the front of your head and forget it for migraine use! But it is worth buying and keeping somewhere to hand for those initial headache pangs by your eyes and forehead - hence the name I guess!! It can also work alongside the nastier headaches to keep you going in between ibuprofen and the like so I personally think it should be in most people's medicine cabinets.
Summary: A good item to have in your medicine cabinet
