Advantages: Nice smell, soothed my forehead
Disadvantages: Didn't stop my headache
4head is a solid stick of levomenthol whose alleged purpose is to relieve tension headaches but whose true purpose I'm convinced lies in the realm of humorous practical jokes. Or at any rate, I managed a whole FIVE minutes before I got the stuff in my eye (which burns!) because I made the mistake of massaging my forehead then rubbing my eyes.
===What does it look like?===
The levomenthol is a white coloured waxy solid substance that comes in a cylindrical tube a bit like a lipstick that is about 3 inches long and an inch across. In action it is also much like a lipstick - take the lid off, twist the base to expose the stick and rub it on your forehead. Just be sure not to get it confused with your lipstick or you'll end up with burning lips and a big sqiggly line of lipstick all over your forehead, which all my fashionable friends (of which I have none) assure me isn't a cool look.
===How does it work?===
The active ingredient in this product is Levomenthol which is a form of menthol. When applied to the skin, it produces a cooling/burning sensation and acts as a topical analgesic (painkiller). It dilates blood vessels and acts as a muscle soother. Applying it to the forehead allegedly relaxes the relevant muscles in the forehead and helps soothe a headache.
===Does it work?===
The website says that they did a clinical trial and that it works on tension headaches. However, all I can state for sure is that it didn't make my headache go away yesterday. Perhaps I had the wrong type of headache. Perhaps it just doesn't work on me. On the plus side, though, it didn't make me sick (which my regular painkillers did).
===What does it feel like?===
A couple of minutes after applying, your forehead starts to burn and tingle. This carries on for about 10 minutes or so after which it feels a bit tight. At no point did I notice an easing off of my headache.
This product cost 5 pounds for the stick and can be got from the pharmacy or large supermarket. I haven't finished using it yet, so I'm not sure how long it lasts, but I've hardly made a scratch in it even though I've spend much of the last 24 hours rubbing it against my forehead. It says 100 uses, though this must depend on how big your forehead is and how much you rub on at a time.
===All natural! You can use as much as you like!===
Being a cynical scientist, I remain firmly cynical of products stating how NATURAL they are and how since it doesn't have any NASTY DRUGS you can have as much as you like. To me this seems likely to be an obvious shorthand for "doesn't do a thing". However, I'm also a big user of other menthol products - menthol-related compounds ARE active ingredients and do do things (e.g. make your skin burn, soothe muscles), they just don't seem to work on headaches for me. If you rub it on your upper lip instead (not a recommended use), it clears the sinuses.
===What advantages does it have?===
- It's all NATURAL. Well, like I've said before on other reviews, something being natural does not mean it's good for you. Belladonna is natural. Doesn't mean I'll be eating it.
- You can have AS MUCH as you want! Great! As much as I want of something that doesn't work on me! Lucky me!
- It doesn't interact with other drugs! Yes, nor do lots of things that don't actually work. My chocolate bar doesn't interact with my other drugs and it made me feel better.
- It leaves your forehead smelling minty fresh! Fabulous! I have finally found a solution to embarassing forehead odour! No, I know, I'd never have thought of that one either.
- It has HILARIOUS potential for practical jokes. Before this, when you were doing HILARIOUS menthol-related practical jokes, you had to muck around with something like wintergreen which gets absolutely everywhere. Well this is a solid stick, so you can just rub it on something and it leaves enough of a residue that whoever touches it next gets menthol on their hands.
===What do you mean, hilarious practical jokes?===
Sheesh, do I have to spell it out for you? Menthol-related compounds applied to the skin makes your skin feel like it's burning. Remember rubbing wintergreen on your calves before football? Remember what happened if you didn't wash your hands and then rubbed your eyes? Or (much worse) went to the toilet? Well, there you go, great potential for hilarious practical jokes involving getting menthol on someone else who will then go "Ow ow ow" and doubly "Ow ow ow" if they get it some place sensitive. Ideal for sadists and people who never really grew up. Just use your imagination. Or ask a ten year old.
===Who can have it?===
They sensibly advise you to check with a doctor before giving it to a child. But I reckon this is more because they need to be sure that headaches aren't for some really bad reason. Menthol can irritate your skin, so if you are sensitive to it or have cracked skin then don't have it.
It suggests that asthmatics only use it in a well-ventilated room, but that's because being menthol, it stinks and that can trigger a small number of people off, so they are covering themselves. My personal experience is that menthol is generally ok for my asthma and I have aspririn sensitive asthma, so I'm in a more "at risk" group than most asthmatics.
Menthol in a stick sounds like a really useful thing to me for a number of things. However, sadly, it doesn't seem to work on me for relieving my headaches, so I'll only give it three stars. But I reckon it would come in really handy for circumstances that merited menthol (sinuses, sore muscles etc)- it's light, it's small, it's handy and it's solid so it isn't all mucky.
Summary: Menthol in a stick. May or may not help headaches, but definitely cleared my sinuses nicely.
