Ricola Original Sugar Free Lozenges
by jeanclifford
I am always buying the Ricola sugar free drops. These come in a handy little square shaped cardboard box and they cost £1.30 from Sainsbury's. They are very widely available and though some people may take them only for sore throats or ticklish coughs, I eat them because I like the taste of them. The box is small at only 45g and there ... are about twenty sweets inside the box. The sugar free ones are the best and they come in a lot of different flavours but the original ones are my favourite. They are sweet, considering that they are sugar free. They are small and hardboiled with no soft centre.
The original Ricola sweet has a mild menthol peppermint taste to it, which is good if I have a slightly sore throat or ticklish cough. The taste of the menthol is very mild and you hardly notice it is there. There are only 6 calories per sweet so they are good for those who are watching their calorie intake.
These sweets are best sucked rather than chewed. They are not to be taken in large doses due to some ingredient causing a possible laxative effect in some people, though I have personally not found this to be a problem, and I eat a lot of these sweets.
The only thing I don't like about them is that they are not individually wrapped inside the box and if I have an opened box in the car or at the bottom of my bag, I have found that when the air gets to them, they have a tendency to stick together and it's problematic trying to prize them apart. This often means that I have to pop two into my mouth at once!
The sweets are the perfect size for sucking on long car journeys or when out and about. They keep the mouth from becoming too dry and I like that they are filled with natural ingredients and 13 herbs. They make a pleasant taste from some of the usual cough and sweet drops I am used to and I am enjoying tasting al the different flavours but so far the original ones are the best.
Highly recommended cough sweet and generally a pleasant tasting sucky sweet. Read the complete review |

Strepsils Warm
by Joker25
As I work with small children, colds and flus are something of an occupational hazard. So, even though we're now well into May it didn't surprise me in the slightest to find myself coming down with a heavy cold, especially since there's a bank holiday I could be out enjoying.
With weary resignation I turned to our ... arsenal of medication and found the usual painkillers and sinus tablets. I also found that my boyfriend had added a packet of these Strepsils Warm to our weaponry. I noticed there were only a couple missing and he commented that he hadn't much liked them. With my throat starting to feel a bit scratchy I figured I had nothing to lose and popped one in my gob.
After a couple of minutes of sucking (minds out of the gutter, please) I have to say I felt distinctly underwhelmed. The blurb states that they contain ginger, wasabi and spices to generate a warming, comforting feeling but this just didn't happen for me at all. They were soothing in the manner of any throat sweet but I was hard pressed to taste the ginger and spices and there was no warming sensation whatsoever. In fact, other than knowing that they taste sweet I found it very difficult to pinpoint the flavour of these throat sweets. Each one lasted quite a long while - ten minutes or more - and reduced the pain of swallowing and coughing but I did find that the effects weren't particularly long lasting; within half an hour of finishing one I'd find I needed another. That's not great when you're not supposed to have more than 12 in a 24 hour period. That said, the morning after having three or four of these I did find that my throat felt normal again with no scratchiness. It's worth noting that these lozenges are purely aimed at sore throats and do not contain menthol so will do little to shift a bunged up nose.
With a packet of 24 coming in a hefty £3.99, these aren't something I would buy again unless my throat was particularly sore and I was desperate. The warming effect is a gimmick and there are other lozenges on the market that will do a similar job for half the cost. Read the complete review |

Beecham's Germolene
by jeanclifford
I have used Germolene by Beechams for many years and I always have a tube of it in the cupboard with the rest of the medicines. This has been around for a long time and it is a tried and trusted medicated ointment that its suitable or a wide variety of different ailments such as cuts and bites and burns and scalds and nettle rash. It ... can be kept for a long time without it going off as it has such a long shelf life. This come sin two sizes, large or medium and I buy the smaller one for which I pay about £2.99.
The ointment has a mild anesthetic effect and this is soothing on the skin especially if I use it if I have been stung by a nettle or bitten by an insect. I am a midge magnet at times, especially when the weather is humid and this is when I use this product the most. It soothes the insect bites and takes away the need for me to itch and scratch and therefore make the problem worse as the bites can become infected.
The cream is thick and a light pink in colour and I always feel it has a very strong medicinal sort of smell which has never changed over the years. It's a comforting sort of soothing smell and the cream hurts slightly whenever it is applied to the skin, but this is only a temporary feeling as this soon fades. It's a very rich and moisturising cream and it contains lanolin and yellow paraffin.
I have also used this when I burned my hand and the bottom inside of my arm when I have been accidentally touching the insides of a hot oven. My partner used it for a nasty burn he gave himself with the barbeque. It has good healing properties and it is soothing and helps to ease the pain of any minor sort f injury. I used to use it on the boys when they were small and it is a tried and trusted method of reducing pain, preventing infection and soothing sore and irritated skin. I recommend it highly.
