Jakemans Blackcurrant Menthol Soothing Menthol Sweets
by basketofbuttons
I must have tried just about every throat lozenge and tablet known to man. I have always particularly like the Jakeman's lozenges as I don't find that they are too strongly flavoured and yet they are quite soothing and dos seem to work reasonably well. The nicest flavour of the bunch has to be the blackcurrant ones - my favourite ... flavour and one I cannot resist, even if I don't have a sore throat.
I buy these from my local petrol station and they cost 75p for a 100g bag. That sounds like quite a lot of money but really they are worth it. I have also had the honey and lemon variety but I personally find the blackcurrant flavour so much more palatable.
These little sweets come individually wrapped and they are in a pretty, quite old fashioned looking, I think, plastic bag. They just remind me of old fashioned hard boiled sweets, to look at. These lozenges, like most throat tablets, are menthol based, but I like that they don't blow my head off as they are not too strong and I am able to eat one all the way through without having to dispose of it.
They have quite a sweet and sugary taste to them which sort of distracts from the menthol flavour, but I like this. I hate throat sweets which are too strongly flavoured with menthol as most of the time I think it defeats the object, as I just cannot manage to eat them all the way through if they are too strong to keep them in my mouth.
The idea is that you suck (not chew) these sweets all the way through until they are all gone. By the time I have finished one I can feel a definite improvement at the back of my throat. They won't numb my throat, but sucking one of these is certainly very soothing and comforting and I think there is just something about taking blackcurrant for a sore throat that seems to work wonders for me. Whether it's a placebo affect or not, I'm not sure, but these sweets do wonders not only if I have a sore throat, but they also help with ticklish coughs too.
Overall, I really cannot fault them. A bag will last me for ages, and whilst I admit to eating them even if my throat feels fine, they do work best for mild to moderate sore throats.
