Advantages: Great for hangovers and other general pains

Disadvantages: Not instant, Temporary relief

Sound confusing? Well it would sound even more confusing if you have just woken up in the morning after an almighty binge on Bacardi Coke’s (my favourite) the night before.

My mum of all people always suggested that if I had been drinking I should always have a glass of milk before sleeping. “Milk – You Must be Joking” was my reply. I would probably through-up with all that booze in my system. So the next alternative is one or two glasses of water.

Although this does help it still doesn’t stop your head from feeling like a football that’s being kicked around and your stomach and legs feeling like jelly.

I have found over the years that one of the best remedies is “Alka-Seltzer” tablets.

I have been using the original version since the last ten years and more recently started using the XS version since they also go for the same price of £3.49 for a box of 20 tablets from Pharmacy2u, who are my regular suppliers.

I saw an opinion today on this product and this gave me the impetus for my opinion.

The dosage is 2 tablets in water, to be taken every 4 hours as required. You can take a maximum of 8 tablets in a 24 hour period.

These tablets are the effervescent type and therefore will start fizzing immediately they are inserted into the water. Wait for them to completely dissolve before swallowing the mixture. They contain a high dosage of Aspirin (324mg per tablet to be precise) and therefore those you are allergic to aspirin should totally avoid this product.

Now my reaction to the product. First of all just the very thought of swallowing something or drinking something (other than plain water) in the morning of a hangover is a daunting one indeed. However since these are effervescent they create a concoction similar in looks to a soda or sparkling mineral water and thus the initial reaction is somewhat stifled. It also helps your body to accept the m
edicine since it is in a liquid form.

One of the most appauling things about these tablets is there taste. I usually just pinch my nose closed and try and swallow this down as quickly as possible.

They do undoubtedly work and relief is usually felt within an hour after intake. The effects will wear off in about three to four hours time and I would recommend that you try and eat something (if you are upto it) and then take another 2 tablets.

In an effort to make things a bit more tolerable for consumers they also have a Lemon Flavoured version. However due to the potency of the medicine this only has a slight effect in making the product taste better.

Alka-Seltzer tablets can also be used for normal headaches and other types of pains like muscular paints, toothache, period pains and the likes.

Overall a good product that works but don’t expect instant or permanent relief. Only time can do that and off course cutting back on the booze in “the night before the morning”

I always think a few pints of water before you go to bed is the best hangover cure. That is of course if you're in any fit state to remember to do so...!

Yes of course the best cure is not to drink. BUt that would be no fun would it?

Good op. Can't say I've ever been so drunk that I've needed them... not yet anyway! Cheryl.
