Advantages: Stops the horrible itching of insect bites
Disadvantages: Bit pricey
It's that time of year again - the sun is blasting down on us, I've taken to a skirt (a rare event trust me!), and the windows are as wide open as they can get to let any breath of air in to the house. For me, this time of year also means insect bites. Hubby dear man gets maybe one or three through the summer. Me, I'm usually three or four a week at least, and mine turn into large red mounds that itch like crazy for days and days, and if I'm reeeeeally unlucky they get infected and I end up at the docs.
For the most part, for the bites and stings I get (mostly bites I believe) it's Anthisan to the rescue! I don't know what I'd do without this small tube of cream, I panic when I can't find it because the itching drives me to distraction some times. The tube is fairly small, and it's not exactly cheap, there are in fact other brands out there which are cheaper, but I'd rather pay a bit more for this (around £3.75 for a 20g tube) than spend less and get a different brand and find it doesn't work properly. I've tried that money saving route before, and let me tell you it was a miserable experience and one I'd rather not repeat thanks!
The active ingredient in Anthisan is 2% Mepyramine Maleate, it's this stuff which does the biz and stops the nasty little bites and stings from itching so badly. The tube also says it can be used for nettle rash and bee stings and other things of that nature, I can't comment on these uses however as I've never had to try it for them, however knowing how well it works for insect bites I'd guess it would be pretty good for those too.
When you apply the cream, you want to try and leave it for a bit before putting clothing over it and of course you do have to try not to scratch the area (yes I know it's hard!). A few minutes after the application, the itching does ease and you can get on with your day. For me personally, I find morning and evening applications normally do the trick, but the tube does say it can be applied up to 3 times a day for 3 days. Other warnings on the tube are for not using it on broken skin and for those who have eczema, and it does warn you not to use it on the same area for more than 3 days in a row - I have no idea why this is, and I'm sure I've probably got this wrong and used it for 4 days instead of 3 without thinking in the past, and my leg didn't fall off, but I guess it's best to follow the manufacturers instructions really.
Overall for me, this cream is worth it's price tag. It lets me get on with things without focusing on my itching skin, and I think using it does seem to help the bites go down a bit faster too which means I don't look quite so much like I've got some dreaded lurgy!
Summary: A very handy tube of cream to have around the house, and small enough to keep in your bag too.

- 01/07/09 My hubby suffers like you. In the worst incident he was hospitalised with septicaemia when one small bite from a horse fly went horribly nasty. His foot was like something off the elephant man!
Funny how these small things can have so much power! |
