Advantages: Very effective and provides almsot instant relief, Easy to use and pleasant smell
Disadvantages: None
Being a frequent traveller to West Africa, as some of you are aware, leaves my skin open to abuse by the most repulsive of insects "the mosquito". Not only have I been bitten by these blood sucking flying monsters but have also been unfortunate to have acquired Malaria on two occasions. I never used to use any creams or other medications except my anti-malarial tablets, until quite recently. One of my friends told me about "Anthisan" cream just prior to my last visit to Ghana. They come in tubes of 20 grams and I purchased it at £3.80 from Boots. However I later found out that it is available at £3.39 from Pharmacy2u.co.uk. The cream is a pleasant smelling concution and needs to be applied to the affected areas two or three times a day. This is basically suitable for all type of insect bites and stings. However I doubt that the makers produced this for mosquito bites. It was probably produced more for the insects that affect us here. However they definately do work on mosquito bites as I found out on my travels. One of the major benifits with this cream is that if you have been bitten and you have applied the cream to the affected area, firstly it instantly allievates the itching and the soreness but more importantly once the stuff is one you it keeps insects away. It works somewhat like an repellant. I ended up rubbing a bit on both my arms everday throughout my trip. The active ingredient in Anthisan Cream is Mepyramine maleate 2% w/w. This ingredient if used in a oral form is used for allergies and induces drowsiness. Don't worry your arm or leg won't fall off to sleep by using the cream. You should not use this product on broken or very sensitive skin and should keep it away from your eyes and mouth. I have also recently found out that the makers have also quite recently launched a new product namely Anthisan Plus Sting Relief Spray. This is available a
t £3.79 from Pharmacy2u. The pack size is of 60 metered doses and this variation contains an added ingredient called Benzocaine which I presume creates more of a numbing effect so that the affected area becomes less sensitive to the agitation and thus gives more time for the main active ingredient to do it's work. I personally would stick to the cream as this would last you longer and is very easy to carry around. Overall I was very impressed with the product and with its effectivness even in the most hotile areas of the world. It has now become a staple item in my travel bag.

- 13/11/01 I always react very badly to mosquito bites. I look alarming as I get beestung lips and extra cheeks, and once my eyes closed up completely. Ruined a holiday for me in France once. I will try anything!!!!
